About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has established himself as a composer and conductor working fluently across orchestral, band, and chamber idioms. His works have been commissioned and performed worldwide, from Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center to the Sydney Opera House, and he has received major recognitions including the A. Austin Harding Award and the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest.

Balmages serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic. He maintains an active guest conducting schedule with all-state ensembles, university groups, and regional orchestras internationally, and holds membership in the American Bandmasters Association. His compositions were performed at the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service, and he received the inaugural James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Why we love this

Balmages has solved a real frustration in home practice by pairing essential technical work with genuinely engaging background tracks that students actually want to play along with. The variety of styles (techno, R&B, hip-hop, rock) means your students will stay motivated through scales and long tones instead of viewing them as chores. This approach turns the daily fundamentals routine into something that feels more like jamming than drilling.

What to expect

Stepping into a recording studio where you're the soloist and the band is tight and locked behind you. The production quality of the background tracks makes practice feel less like solo work and more like genuine ensemble playing, with groove and energy that make technical fundamentals feel purposeful rather than abstract.

Who it's for

Tenor saxophonists of any age who need daily technique work but struggle to stay engaged with traditional method books. This book works particularly well for students who respond to contemporary music styles and benefit from the external motivation of playing along with professional-quality backing tracks.

How to get the most out of it

  • Select a groove that matches your current focus. If you're working on consistent long tone production, choose a slower tempo track that lets you concentrate on tone quality without rushing.
  • Adjust your practice device volume so the background track sits behind your sound, not ahead of it. You should hear yourself clearly as the featured voice.
  • Vary which track you pair with the same technical exercise each day. Playing the same scale over different grooves develops rhythmic flexibility and keeps repetition fresh.
  • Record yourself playing along with one of the grooves once a week to assess intonation and timing objectively.

How to use it

Assign specific exercises from this book as part of a structured home practice routine, rotating through different background tracks weekly to maintain student interest. The grooves also work well as a foundation for improvisation lessons, since students hear real harmonic and rhythmic contexts while developing their technical foundation.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone control and consistent tone production across the range
  • Rhythmic precision in scales and interval studies
  • Intonation stability in musical contexts (not just isolated exercises)
  • Stylistic awareness of contemporary grooves (hip-hop, R&B, rock, techno)
  • Ensemble listening and playing in time with a fixed accompaniment
