Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has built a reputation as a composer and conductor equally comfortable across orchestral, band, and chamber idioms. His works have received performances from professional symphony orchestras to elementary ensembles in spaces including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Sydney Opera House. He received the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest for Love and Light.

Balmages holds the James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Visual and Performing Arts and was commissioned by the University of Miami to compose for the inauguration of President Julio Frenk. His music was performed at the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service. As a conductor, he guest leads all-state ensembles, university groups, and professional orchestras worldwide, with notable appearances at the Midwest Clinic, College Band Directors Conference, and numerous international venues. He currently serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education.

Why we love this

Balmages understands that fundamental technique doesn't have to feel like a chore. By pairing essential studies with contemporary production tracks (techno, R&B, hip-hop, rock), this method book transforms daily warm-ups into engaging practice sessions that students actually want to complete. The immersive accompaniments create a professional recording studio experience at home, making technique work feel less like drill and more like jamming with a band.

What to expect

Contemporary and energized. The background tracks pulse with modern production values—crisp drums, synth layers, live instrumentation—that put you in the mindset of a session musician rather than a student practicing scales. Alternating between genres keeps the ear fresh and the body engaged, making long-tone exercises feel like warm-ups before a real performance.

Who it's for

Mallet percussionists in grades 5 and up who need daily technical work but struggle with motivation during solo practice. Students preparing for band auditions or advancing through repertoire will find these studies accelerate their foundation building. Teachers seeking home practice tools that actually engage young musicians without requiring direct oversight will find this method book invaluable.

How to get the most out of it

  • Sync your strikes to the beat tracks by starting with slower tempos and gradually matching the recorded tempo once you've internalized the rhythmic pulse.
  • Let the background tracks do the rhythmic heavy lifting while you focus on resonance and sustain in long tones; the accompaniment will keep you grounded.
  • Experiment with different genres to target different aspects of control: use hip-hop tracks for crisp articulation and rock tracks for dynamic power and expression.
  • Record yourself playing along with the accompaniments to identify timing issues that might be masked by the full production in real time.

How to use it

Assign studies from this book as weekly home practice assignments tied to band repertoire you're preparing; students will spend more consistent time on fundamentals when the accompaniments feel rewarding. Use sections in sectional rehearsals to build mallet percussion technique across your percussion section in parallel with concert music preparation. Reference specific studies during the first weeks of the school year to establish an effective daily routine that carries through the entire season.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone control and resonance with sustained mallet contact
  • Major and minor scale fluency across the full range of pitched percussion instruments
  • Rhythmic accuracy and synchronization with recorded tempo tracks
  • Dynamic control from soft phrasing to full projection
  • Articulation clarity across multiple strike styles (hard mallets, medium mallets, yarn mallets)
  • Consistent daily practice habit formation through engagement and motivation
