About the Composer: Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin balances an active performance schedule with mentoring students who have won major competitions. She holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree with distinction from the University of Michigan and a master's degree from Oakland University School of Performing Arts, and has delivered workshops and masterclasses across the United States, Canada, Japan, and Taiwan.

Rollin's compositions have earned commissions from Clavier Companion magazine, the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and the Michigan Music Teachers Association. Her work appears regularly in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals Bulletin, and she has served as a national judge for both the MTNA Student Composition Competition and the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest. In 2018, the MTNA commissioned Suite Detroit, a trio for flute, alto saxophone, and piano, which premiered at the national conference in Orlando. Her ASCAP award-winning series Museum Masterpieces (Books 1-4) was featured in a multimedia concert presented by the Steinway Society.

Why we love this

Rollin writes early intermediate repertoire that actually sounds compelling to performers and audiences, avoiding the sterile etude feel that plagues so much piano music at this level. Tango Tangle brings genuine rhythmic sophistication and character without requiring advanced technique, making it satisfying for students ready to explore beyond folk songs and simplified classics.

What to expect

The tango pulses with rhythmic drive and Latin flavor, creating momentum that carries the player forward. Lyrical moments offer breathing room amid the propulsive energy, inviting expressive playing without abandoning the piece's essential sophistication.

Who it's for

Early intermediate pianists who are ready for music with genuine style and character. This piece rewards the student who has developed basic technique and musicianship and is beginning to explore different musical idioms and rhythmic sophistication.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the rhythmic vitality of the tango pulse from the opening; resist dragging by thinking forward through each measure rather than emphasizing individual beats.
  • Work hands independently in passages where one hand carries the tango rhythm while the other develops the melody or harmonic color, building security before combining them at tempo.
  • Shape the dynamic contrasts Rollin writes with intention so that softer sections create genuine tension rather than losing energy.
  • Experiment with slight rubato in lyrical passages while keeping the accompaniment steady, allowing room for the tango character without becoming scattered.

How to use it

Tango Tangle works beautifully in a mixed recital where you want to show a student's growth into contemporary repertoire with character. It also serves as an excellent programming partner for 20th century works, offering contemporary compositional thinking at an accessible level.

Skills your students will build

  • Understanding tango rhythmic conventions and maintaining consistent pulse in Latin music
  • Playing hands independently with different rhythmic functions (rhythm section versus melody)
  • Executing smooth dynamic transitions while preserving tempo integrity
  • Interpreting contemporary compositional style and character with musicality
