Why we love this
Sheldon delivers the kind of energetic, musically satisfying concert opener that actually makes your students excited to rehearse. The orchestration gives every section compelling material to play, the rhythmic drive keeps the ensemble locked together, and the tuneful melodic content ensures audiences remain engaged from start to finish.
What to expect
Synergies radiates forward momentum and brightness. The interplay between wind sections and the active percussion writing create a sense of ensemble collaboration that feels genuinely musical rather than merely technical.
Who it's for
This is an ideal choice for concert bands at the 2.5 grade level who want to program something energetic and musically rewarding without extreme technical demands. Directors seeking a piece that sounds polished and substantial while remaining accessible will find immediate success with this Sheldon work.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the melodic lines with careful attention to phrase breathing; the tuneful nature of the piece demands musical legibility even at the brisk tempo
- Balance the colorful orchestration by allowing the winds to shine without overshadowing the percussion's rhythmic contributions to the energy
- Lock the rhythmic drive by establishing a solid tempo in rehearsal and maintaining it consistently; the high energy depends on precision, not rushing
