Description
Set for medium level sax quartet (AATB) and optional drumset, this is a fun collection of four traditional carols done up in non traditional ways! "Up on the Housetop" kicks into a catchy, latin flavored version of this children's favorite Christmas carol. "Hark the Herald Angels" is set as a jump swing chart in the style of Gene Krupa. "Silent Night" is arranged in 4/4 (as opposed to the original triple meter), to create the feel of a rock ballad. "We Three Kings" is an upbeat, jazz waltz. More about this title

Why we love this

Ryan Meeboer strips away the reverence from these carols and gives them genuine personality. Each arrangement takes a different stylistic path, so your students aren't playing the same harmonic template four times in a row. The optional drums part means you can scale this up or keep it lean depending on what your ensemble needs.

What to expect

Four different rooms, four different parties. You're swaying to a Latin breeze, then snap into a 1940s jump session, then settling into a moody rock moment, then floating through a three-beat jazz daydream. The energy shifts completely each time, keeping performers and listeners alert.

Who it's for

Intermediate saxophone quartets that want to stretch beyond classical transcriptions. This set works for concert band programs with strong sax sections looking for feature material, or dedicated chamber groups ready to tackle style and groove.

How to get the most out of it

  • Nail the latin clave feel in "Up on the Housetop" by having the rhythm section lock the pulse before the saxes come in. A light touch on the piano or drums will keep this from sounding like a parade.
  • Emphasize the swing ride and backbeat articulation in "Hark the Herald Angels." This isn't straight-eighths; it's pure swing feel, so the ensemble needs to hear that Gene Krupa reference together.
  • Treat "Silent Night" as a rock ballad, not a hymn. The shift to 4/4 meter changes everything about phrasing and vibrato width.
  • The jazz waltz in "We Three Kings" sits in a pocket between Latin and straight swing. Listen to how the drums walk the waltz feel without pushing the tempo.

How to use it

Drop this into a winter or holiday concert as a palate cleanser between heavier repertoire. The 8:20 runtime gives you breathing room in your program without eating up too much calendar time for rehearsals. These arrangements also make excellent jazz ensemble features if you have the rhythm section in place.

Skills your students will build

  • Latin clave rhythms and syncopation
  • Swing articulation and feel in medium tempo
  • Meter conversion (triple meter to 4/4) and how it changes phrasing
  • Jazz waltz feel in 3/4 time
  • Blend and intonation across AATB voicings
  • Style-specific interpretation (rock ballad, jump swing, Latin, jazz waltz)
