Why we love this

Gilpin's gift for making standard holiday songs feel fresh without losing their appeal shines here. The syncopated swing rhythms and clean harmonies transform a familiar tune into something that works equally well in a jazz, show, or traditional concert context, giving you real programming flexibility without sounding forced or gimmicky.

What to expect

Upbeat and playful, with a retro 40s polish that makes you want to move. The syncopated rhythms give the arrangement a gentle urgency and jazz sensibility that feels both nostalgic and contemporary, while the sweet harmonies keep "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" grounded in its original warmth.

Who it's for

Directors leading mixed choirs, treble choirs, or men's choirs who want a holiday arrangement with genuine swing flavor and stageable appeal. This works for high school and college ensembles as well as community and show choirs looking for something that gets an audience smiling without feeling saccharine.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock in the syncopation early in rehearsals by isolating the swing rhythm pattern with the ensemble; tap it together before singing to establish that looser, 40s groove.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment during later rehearsals to help singers feel the swing pocket and hear how their parts sit within the full arrangement.
  • Consider the visual component from the start: choreography, Santa hats, and energy should match the playful, upbeat character of the music rather than conflict with it.
  • Balance clarity of the melody line with the supporting harmonies; the arrangement shines when the swing feel drives the ensemble forward as one unit.

How to use it

Open a holiday concert with this to set a lighthearted tone, or place it mid-program as a palate cleanser between more serious seasonal literature. The arrangement pairs well with both traditional and contemporary holiday fare, and its compact form (6 pages) makes it ideal for adding to a program without displacing other repertoire.
