Description
Teach bass with the popular Suzuki Bass School. The Suzuki Method® of Talent Education is based on Shinichi Suzuki's view that every child is born with ability, and that people are the product of their environment. According to Shinichi Suzuki, a world-renowned violinist and teacher, the greatest joy an adult can know comes from developing a child's potential so he/she can express all that is harmonious and best in human beings. Students are taught using the "mother-tongue" approach. Each series of books for a particular instrument in the Suzuki Method is considered a Suzuki music school, such as the Suzuki Bass School. Suzuki lessons are generally given in a private studio setting with additional group lessons. The student listens to the recordings and works with their Suzuki bass teacher to develop their potential as a musician and as a person.

This MIDI Disc and CD-ROM set is a great tool for Suzuki bass lessons. This enhanced CD-ROM of the Suzuki Bass method, Volume 1 contains all of the piano accompaniments plus an exclusive version of Home Concert™ which will show the music on a computer screen, while turning the pages for your students as they play. Also included on the CD are the listening tracks from the Gary Karr recordings.

More about this title

About the Artist: Gary Karr

Gary Karr stands as one of the most influential bass soloists of the modern era, fundamentally changing how the instrument is perceived in classical music. His virtuosic technique and expressive musicianship brought the bass from the accompaniment section into the spotlight, inspiring generations of players to pursue serious solo careers. His recordings, performances, and educational contributions have shaped bass pedagogy worldwide and demonstrated the instrument's full artistic potential.

Why we love this

The Suzuki Bass School, Volume 1 recordings feature Gary Karr's pure, resonant tone and thoughtful phrasing as a model for young students to internalize. Hearing a world-class bassist perform these foundational pieces transforms how students understand sound production and musicianship from day one. The piano accompaniments and Home Concert software create a complete learning ecosystem that keeps practice sessions engaging and musically rewarding.

What to expect

These carefully chosen folk melodies and variations unfold with warmth and clarity, introducing the bass as a singing instrument capable of expression and beauty. Each piece feels approachable yet artistically complete, offering students glimpses of the musicianship they are building toward.

Who it's for

This resource serves Suzuki bass students working through Volume 1 alongside their private instructor. Teachers will find the recordings and software essential tools for reinforcing daily practice and building the listening foundation that the Suzuki Method emphasizes from the start.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the Gary Karr recordings multiple times before rehearsing a new piece, focusing on his vibrato, bow control, and phrasing rather than just the notes
  • Use the Home Concert software during practice to develop ensemble listening skills and coordinate entries with the piano part without requiring an accompanist present
  • Reference the recorded accompaniments when working through rhythmic passages, letting the piano guide your rhythmic clarity and accuracy

How to use it

Use the Home Concert software during weekly lessons to create a semi-ensemble experience where students hear themselves alongside professional accompaniment. The listening tracks belong in the practice routine daily, helping students internalize the classical Suzuki repertoire before formal lesson work begins.

Skills your students will build

  • Tone production and vibrato control by modeling world-class sound
  • Rhythmic precision when coordinating with piano accompaniment
  • Listening discrimination and ear training through repeated exposure to artistry
  • Ensemble awareness and coordination with accompaniment
  • Foundational positions and first-piece bow technique
