About the Composer: Mary Cohen

Mary Cohen studied violin, piano, chamber music, and composition at the Royal College of Music, where she earned numerous major prizes before spending several years as a violinist with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. She established a teaching studio that has evolved into a research center for her educational work, and her sixty-plus string publications are now adopted by major examining bodies internationally. Since 2001, Cohen has served as technical consultant and composer for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music's Music Medals program.

Cohen's teaching philosophy centers on placing instrumental learning within a broader musical context, honoring each student's individual learning style. A dedicated advocate for chamber music from the earliest stages, she founded String Quartets From Scratch to introduce ensemble playing to young musicians and has created extensive repertoire for group learning. Her celebrated Superseries has fundamentally reshaped contemporary string pedagogy while bringing genuine musical joy to countless young players.
