Description
Warner Bros. Publications selected the six patriotic songs in this Jazz Superset #5 to provide music for the jazz ensemble that is accessible and suitable for a variety of occasions, tempos and styles. Arranger Mike Lewis has paid special attention not only to musical details, bult also to the jazz style of each of these patriotic songs. Although jazz harmonies and stylistic considerations are incorporated into these arrangements, each melody maintains its original integrity. Written for standard instrumentation (5/4 4/4,) these arrangements are playable with only six brass. Optional parts are included for flute, tuba, French horn, and baritone horn treble clef. This Super Set is designed for the medium level; however, professional ensembles will find this arrangement an invaluable asset to their libraries as well. Features "America (My Country 'Tis of Thee)," "America the Beautiful," "The Star-Spangled Banner," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "American Patrol," "God Bless the U.S.A." (11:57)

More about this title

Why we love this

Mike Lewis understands what makes patriotic material work in a jazz context: he preserves the melodies your audience knows while giving them real harmonic sophistication and authentic jazz color. Six tunes means you're not trapped into one tempo or mood, which makes this genuinely useful for programming concerts, pep rallies, or community events where variety matters. The fact that it works with minimal brass gives smaller ensembles real options without sacrificing the sound.

What to expect

Familiar patriotic melodies reimagined through a jazz lens, swinging with harmonic depth while keeping the songs themselves instantly recognizable. The collection moves through different grooves and styles, which keeps the energy alive across 12 minutes without feeling like a tour through a jukebox.

Who it's for

Medium-level jazz ensembles that need accessible patriotic material with real musical substance. Directors programming summer concerts, holiday shows, or institutional events will find six polished arrangements that don't require the ensemble to stretch beyond Grade 2, but that professionals will also respect.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay attention to the style markings within each tune. Lewis sets different grooves and feels across the medley, so the contrast between straight swing and a more march-like treatment of 'American Patrol' needs to land clearly.
  • Balance the melody against the harmonic texture. These arrangements lean on sophisticated voicings, but the original tunes should never disappear into the background.
  • Use the optional parts strategically. Flute and French horn add color in specific moments; bring them in where Lewis scores them rather than as add-ons throughout.
  • Lock the rhythm section early. With a 192-page score covering six tunes, your time and groove consistency will make or break whether transitions feel intentional or sloppy.

How to use it

Open a summer pops concert with this, or use it as the full second half of a concert where you want to shift into something celebratory without leaving the jazz idiom. The variety means you can extract individual tunes for specific events, 'America the Beautiful' for a more reflective moment, 'American Patrol' for something with more drive.

Skills your students will build

  • Jazz articulation and phrasing in the context of standards
  • Reading and executing varied jazz feels (swing, march, ballad-influenced)
  • Voice leading and harmonic sophistication in jazz voicings
  • Balancing melody projection with ensemble texture
  • Stylistic flexibility across six different arrangements in one score
