Mary Cohen

Mary Cohen has built an international presence as an educational composer with more than sixty string publications currently available, used by major examining bodies across the world. Her training at the Royal College of Music spanned violin, piano, chamber music, and composition; she performed for several years with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra before establishing a teaching studio that became the laboratory for her composition work. Beyond violin and piano, she performs viola and cello, giving her direct insight into the pedagogical needs of string players at every level.

Cohort with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music since 2001 (serving as both technical consultant and composer for their Music Medals project) has sharpened her focus on early-stage learning. She founded String Quartets From Scratch, a chamber music club for young musicians ages 7-18, recognizing that ensemble skills and social music-making belong in the first term of instrumental study, not years later. Her belief that instrumental learning thrives within a broad musical context, combined with her gift for writing with humor and clear pedagogical progression, has made the Superseries a cornerstone of contemporary string pedagogy.
