About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske has taught piano and composition at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego for many years, where he also completed his undergraduate degree summa cum laude. He holds a master's degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Southern California, having studied with distinguished pianists Joanne Baker and Stewart Gordon respectively.

With over 700 published compositions and arrangements across multiple difficulty levels, Dr. Labenske brings substantial creative depth to his work. His honors include performing in the 1984 Olympic Games opening ceremonies and receiving Academic All-American Scholar recognition. He remains an active concert artist, collaborates frequently with his wife Judith Spaite Labenske in sacred performances, and conducts keyboard workshops nationally. His compositional work spans solo piano repertoire, chamber music (including a 2019 MTNA-commissioned piece), and extensive sacred collections for student and professional musicians.

Why we love this

Labenske has distilled 33 contemporary Christian selections into arrangements that sound polished without demanding hours of practice from busy worship pianists. The collection earned recognition as a Federation Festivals selection, and its breadth allows real programming flexibility: you can move from intimate, contemplative pieces to energetic arrangements that drive a service forward without switching books.

What to expect

These arrangements balance accessibility with musical substance. You'll find moments of quiet reverence alongside energetic, forward-moving passages, creating the dynamic range that contemporary worship requires. The writing sits naturally under the hands and respects the character of each song without oversimplifying the material.

Who it's for

Pianists who lead worship or play contemporary Christian music in church settings and need professional-sounding arrangements that don't require extensive preparation time. This collection suits both late intermediate pianists seeking accessible yet sophisticated repertoire and seasoned players who want reliable, well-crafted arrangements ready to perform with minimal rehearsal.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the performance times provided to structure your worship set; these rough guides help you plan transitions and pacing across different service contexts.
  • Notice where Labenske shifts between lyrical and rhythmically driven styles; mark those transitions in your score so you can prepare mentally for the textural changes.
  • Use the lay-flat comb binding to your advantage by practicing without turning pages, which builds confidence for seamless performance during worship.
  • Identify passages that sit comfortably under your hand early in preparation; these become anchors when you're learning multiple arrangements across the collection.

How to use it

Build your Sunday worship rotation around this collection, selecting arrangements that match the liturgical season or thematic focus of your service. The diversity of styles means you can program a single piece as a prelude or meditation, or draw multiple arrangements across a season to create cohesive sacred programming without constantly sourcing new material.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing accompaniment texture with melodic clarity in contemporary song settings
  • Reading lead-sheet style notation and adapting standard worship progressions
  • Executing rhythmic flexibility and rubato appropriate to reflective versus energetic musical moments
  • Preparing multiple pieces efficiently using performance time guides and lay-flat page design
  • Understanding arrangement choices that preserve song identity while reducing technical demands
