About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske holds the position of professor of music at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he teaches piano and composition. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Southern California (studying with Stewart Gordon) and a master's degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music (where he studied with Joanne Baker). A summa cum laude graduate of PLNU, he was honored with performances in the opening ceremonies of the 1984 Olympic Games and recognition as an Academic All-American Scholar.

Labenske's compositional catalog exceeds 700 published works across multiple difficulty levels. His sacred collections include the extensive Sunday Morning Companion library and Play Praise, a graded piano series of contemporary praise and worship music for developing pianists. He remains active as both a solo recitalist and collaborative performer, frequently presenting keyboard workshops and performing sacred concerts alongside his wife, Judith Spaite Labenske. His work has appeared in American Music Teacher, Piano Magazine, and California Music Teacher, and his chamber composition A Walk Through the Valley was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association for their 2019 National Conference.

Why we love this

Thirty-three carefully curated arrangements spanning the entire liturgical and patriotic calendar means you can reach for this book confidently whether you're preparing for Advent, Holy Week, Pentecost, or a Fourth of July service. Labenske has threaded the needle between sounding polished and remaining learnable; the intermediate-to-late intermediate writing sits in that rewarding middle ground where arrangements never feel thin or overstuffed. The comb binding transforms a potential page-turning headache into a genuinely practical tool for a busy sanctuary musician.

What to expect

These arrangements honor the emotional truth of familiar hymns and patriotic standards while treating them with genuine musical sophistication. You'll encounter warm harmonic reimaginings, thoughtful key relationships, and moments of unexpected textural clarity that remind you why these melodies have endured; the writing never overshadows the tune itself, but it deepens your relationship to it.

Who it's for

Church pianists facing an unforgiving calendar of services and special observances will find this collection indispensable for maintaining a polished repertoire across seasons. Advanced students preparing for church performance or seeking accessible yet musically substantive recital material benefit from the stylistic range and clear performance guidance. Music directors programming pre-service music or creating contemplative moments within worship will appreciate having vetted, time-efficient options at hand.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the approximate performance time listed with each piece before committing to a service slot; the variety in length means you can easily adjust how much material fills a prelude, offertory, or postlude.
  • Pay close attention to harmonic color and voice leading in the left hand, as Labenske's arrangements often trade elaborate figuration for sophisticated chromatic movement and chord substitutions that require clean execution.
  • Approach the patriotic selections with the same care you would give the sacred hymns; these arrangements deserve rehearsal time and won't come off as filler if you invest in phrasing and voicing clarity.
  • Use the comb binding strategically during rehearsal by positioning the book at an angle that lets you see both hands comfortably without hunching, which becomes especially important during longer service runs.

How to use it

Schedule lighter arrangements during the preliminary music of services when attention is gathering, and reserve the more harmonically intricate pieces for communion meditations or benediction moments where the congregation can settle into listening. If you program an Easter service, the multiple Christ resurrection texts give you flexibility to vary the musical approach across different celebrations within a season. The patriotic selections work beautifully as seasonal prelude material leading into or away from national observances, offering a dignified sonic bridge between sacred and civic life.

Skills your students will build

  • Navigating varied harmonic language and chromatic voice leading within a hymn-tune framework
  • Balancing independence between hands when the left hand carries melodic or counter-melodic material
  • Pedal control and registration choices appropriate to sacred performance contexts
  • Memorization strategies for learning multiple pieces efficiently across a liturgical year
  • Stylistic interpretation of patriotic and sacred music across different harmonic periods
