Description
This collection, from the Sunday Morning Companion series, is designed as a practical resource of praise music for church pianists during the Christmas season. A combination of modern classics, recent carols, and Contemporary Christian hits, the songs were written between 1934 and 2015. To assist the busy church pianist, Labenske created arrangements that sound professional, yet require minimal preparation. An approximate performance time is included with each piece. The comb binding creates a lay-flat book that is perfect for study and performance.

About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske holds the position of professor of music at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he teaches piano and composition. A summa cum laude graduate of PLNU, he completed his master's degree in piano performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music under Joanne Baker, and earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Southern California, where he studied with Stewart Gordon.

Beyond the classroom, Labenske maintains an active career as a concert artist, performing both as a soloist and collaborative musician. His compositional catalog spans over 700 published works across varying difficulty levels, including the extensive Sunday Morning Companion library of sacred collections and Play Praise, a graded series for student pianists exploring contemporary praise music. His recent chamber work, A Walk Through the Valley, was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association for their 2019 National Conference.

Why we love this

Labenske understands the realities of church music ministry. These arrangements sound polished and liturgically appropriate without demanding hours of preparation from pianists juggling multiple Sunday services and seasonal demands. The layflat binding and included performance times turn this into a grab-and-go resource that actually gets used, not shelved.

What to expect

These arrangements strike a balance between reverent and accessible. You'll find warm harmonic colors, modern voicings that feel current without being trendy, and a consistent sense that the music exists to serve the liturgical moment rather than showcase the performer.

Who it's for

Church pianists seeking Christmas material that bridges traditional carols with contemporary praise music, all arranged at a level that sounds mature without requiring extensive practice time. Accompanists preparing for holiday services will find both familiar standards and newer pieces that add freshness to seasonal programming.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the registration possibilities on your instrument. Many of these pieces benefit from judicious use of soft pedal or color stops, which Labenske's voicings accommodate gracefully without requiring extensive reharmonization.
  • Balance the melody clearly without sacrificing the harmonic movement underneath. The late intermediate arrangements often place the tune in an inner voice or split between hands; listen for when the primary theme shifts and adjust dynamics accordingly.
  • Use the performance times as rehearsal markers. Working through a piece with its duration in mind helps you locate natural breathing points and shape the arc from introduction to conclusion.

How to use it

Use this collection to staff multiple Christmas services without repeating repertoire. Mix traditional carols with contemporary pieces throughout the season, or build an entire Christmas Eve candlelight service from start to finish using selections from this volume. The variety of tempos and moods makes it easy to construct a coherent program that honors both hymnic tradition and modern worship sensibilities.

Skills your students will build

  • Voicing modern chord progressions in four-part and five-part harmony
  • Managing lyrical melody lines that appear in various registers across the staff
  • Executing clean pedaling in arrangements that blend traditional and contemporary harmonic language
  • Reading and interpreting performance directions for contemporary sacred music
  • Sight-reading variations on familiar melodies and harmonic reharmonizations
