About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Southern California, where he studied with Stewart Gordon, and a master's degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music under Joanne Baker. He has served on the faculty at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he teaches piano and composition, and remains active as both a concert soloist and collaborative pianist.

Labenske has published over 700 compositions and arrangements spanning multiple difficulty levels. His work has been featured in national venues, including a performance in the 1984 Olympic Games opening ceremonies, and he has contributed articles to American Music Teacher, Piano Magazine, and California Music Teacher. Beyond this Blended Worship Companion collection, his sacred keyboard publications include the Play Praise series, a graded collection of contemporary praise arrangements for developing pianists, and the broader Sunday Morning Companion library designed for church musicians.

Why we love this

Labenske understands what a church pianist actually needs: service music that doesn't require choosing between honoring congregational tradition and connecting with contemporary worship. Each medley weaves a hymn or classic sacred song alongside a modern favorite, creating arrangements substantial enough for genuine recital or service moments while staying within the late intermediate to early advanced range that serves skilled but time-stretched church musicians well.

What to expect

These medleys create a bridge between two musical languages within a single piece. You'll experience the grounded, often stately character of a beloved hymn suddenly illuminated by the rhythmic drive and modern harmonic palette of contemporary worship. The effect is contemplative yet alive, respectful of tradition while fully present in the moment.

Who it's for

Church musicians who lead worship services and need reliable preludes, offertories, and postludes that honor both congregational heritage and contemporary faith expressions. This book serves pianists at an advanced-beginner to intermediate-plus level who want arrangements substantial enough to command a service moment without overwhelming their preparation time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the medley voices deliberately so the familiar hymn melody reads clearly in the left hand or as a countermelody while the contemporary tune takes the foreground. This clarity helps congregants recognize both layers.
  • Pedal with intention across key changes or registral shifts within each medley. The comb binding allows easy page turns, but smooth pedal transitions between the hymn and contemporary sections prevent muddiness during tempo or texture changes.
  • Approach tempo as a storytelling choice: the traditional hymn section often benefits from steadiness and reverence, while the contemporary portion may welcome slightly more rhythmic energy. Let the character of each pairing guide your pacing.

How to use it

Use individual medleys as standalone service music throughout the church year, selecting pairings that echo the day's theme or season. Build a small recital program entirely from these arrangements to showcase your church's musical identity, or open a congregational hymn sing by playing a medley version of that day's featured hymn as an invitation.

Skills your students will build

  • Voice leading across hymn and contemporary idioms within a single piece
  • Pedal control through registral and harmonic shifts
  • Balancing multiple melodic lines in different registers
  • Tempo and phrasing choices that honor both traditional and modern musical languages
  • Page turning and transition management in comb-bound service music
