About the Composer: Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin balances an active performance schedule with mentoring accomplished students, having led workshops and masterclasses across North America and Asia. She holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Oakland University School of Performing Arts, and her compositions have earned commissions from major organizations including the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), the Michigan Music Teachers Association, and Clavier Companion magazine.

Rollin's work has been recognized through selections in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals Bulletin and an ASCAP award for her Museum Masterpieces series. She has judged the MTNA Student Composition Competition and served on the panel for the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest. In 2018, the Steinway Society featured her in concert as both composer and pianist, and the MTNA commissioned Suite Detroit, a work for flute, alto saxophone, and piano that premiered at the national conference in Orlando.

Why we love this

Rollin writes ragtime that feels authentically idiomatic to the genre without requiring advanced technique, making this a rare opportunity for intermediate pianists to explore syncopation and swing in a context that genuinely sounds like the real thing. The four-page length keeps students engaged without overwhelming them, and the piece works equally well as a recital solo or as a fun break during repertoire development.

What to expect

Summertime Rag captures the carefree spirit of warm weather with bright, syncopated melodies that dance over a swinging accompaniment. The piece moves with infectious energy and charm, evoking the golden age of ragtime while remaining approachable and fun to play.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists who are ready to tackle syncopated rhythms and want to explore a distinctly American musical style. This piece appeals to students preparing for recitals, festival competitions, or simply looking for a stylistically rich solo that combines technique with genuine musicality.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock in the ragtime rhythms by practicing hands separately first; the syncopated left hand needs independence from the right-hand melody before they integrate.
  • Find the groove by thinking of a steady, underlying pulse beneath the syncopation rather than fighting against it; this helps the piece swing rather than feel choppy.
  • Bring out the character of each phrase by varying tone and articulation, allowing the right hand to sing over a crisp, clean left-hand rhythm.

How to use it

Program this as a recital showpiece or competition piece that lets intermediate students shine with style and personality. It pairs well with more traditional classical repertoire, offering a lively contrast and giving students experience with a major American musical tradition.

Skills your students will build

  • Syncopated rhythm reading and execution
  • Left-hand independence and steady accompaniment pattern maintenance
  • Stylistic understanding of ragtime idioms and swing feel
  • Dynamic contrast and phrasing within a fast-moving piece
