Description
French composer Henri Rabaud (1873-1949) composed the incidental music for an adaptation of Shakespeare's THE MERCHANT OF VENICE (LE MARCHAND DE VENISE) by writer and Rabaud librettist Lucien Népoty. For the incidental music, Rabaud arranged and orchestrated pieces composed by the various musicians of Queen Elizabeth's court. From this music, Rabaud extracted three Suites Anglaises du XVI Siecle (English Suites of the 16th Century). This 1st Suite is in four movements: I. Allegro (music by John Bull; II. Andante (music by William Byrd); III. Allegro (music by Giles Farnaby); IV. Lent (music by Giles Farnaby). Instrumentation: 1.1.0.1: 0.2.0.0: Perc(1): Harp.Org(Harmonium).Hpschrd(Clavecin): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Reprint edition. 11x14 oversized full score.

More about this title

About the Composer: Henri Rabaud

Henri Rabaud (1873-1949) was a French composer, conductor, and pedagogue whose career spanned the Belle Époque and interwar periods. He served as director of the Paris Opéra and later the Opéra-Comique, positions from which he championed both contemporary French composers and the operatic repertoire. His gift for orchestration and his scholarly approach to musical arrangement made him a natural choice for theatrical projects that demanded both artistic sophistication and historical sensitivity.

Rabaud's incidental music for theatrical productions reveals his deep engagement with the dramatic arts. Rather than create entirely original scores, he often researched and reconstructed music from historical periods to serve the dramatic vision of the stage. This approach, evident in his Suites Anglaises du XVI Siècle, demonstrates his conviction that great music, no matter its origin, could be revitalized through intelligent orchestration and contextual arrangement.

Why we love this

Rabaud's arrangement presents Renaissance court music through a sophisticated orchestral lens without overshadowing the original composers' voices. The four-movement structure balances contrast and coherence, making it rewarding for musicians to navigate the distinct characters of Bull, Byrd, and Farnaby while maintaining ensemble unity across a full orchestral palette.

What to expect

The suite inhabits the world between historical reconstruction and Romantic sensibility. Rabaud's orchestration wraps the dignified melodies of Elizabethan composers in warm harmonic colors and transparent textures, creating something that feels both antique and immediate. The journey from Bull's bright Allegro through Byrd's contemplative Andante to Farnaby's paired movements generates a narrative arc that sustains listener engagement.

Who it's for

Orchestras and music schools seeking repertoire that bridges Renaissance music history with late Romantic orchestral practice. Conductors interested in programming works that combine scholarly authenticity with accessibility will find this suite a compelling choice for concert or educational settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the harpsichord and organ continuo with the string section to let the underlying harmonic framework support rather than compete with the melodic lines
  • Approach each movement's character distinctly; the opening Allegro requires clarity and forward motion, while the Andante should breathe with the spaciousness Byrd's writing demands
  • Shape the Farnaby movements with attention to articulation in the woodwinds and strings, which often carry the melodic interest in his original compositions

How to use it

Program this suite as a bridge piece between contemporary works and standard orchestral repertoire, or pair it with other early music arrangements to create a thematic concert exploring how twentieth-century composers engaged with historical sources. Its moderate length and clear structure make it suitable for community orchestras or university ensembles seeking works that combine musicality with pedagogical value.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading 16th-century melodic writing adapted for modern orchestral forces
  • Ensemble balance with continuo instruments (harpsichord, organ, harp) in a full orchestra
  • Stylistic awareness of English Renaissance composers and their individual musical signatures
  • Coordinating articulation and phrasing across woodwind, brass, and string sections in contrapuntal textures
