About the Arranger: Vince Gassi

Vince Gassi

Vince Gassi has built a prolific career as a composer and arranger with more than 100 published works spanning classical, contemporary, and educational repertoire. His compositions and arrangements appear regularly on festival and concert programs across North America, Europe, and Japan, and his creative approach to instrumentation and orchestration has earned him recognition at prestigious venues including the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.

With a Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Ontario and advanced studies in composition and arranging at the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, Gassi holds a Ph.D. from York University in Toronto. For over two decades he has taught instrumental music at the elementary and secondary levels while maintaining an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. His workshops on creative engagement and digital workflow strategies have become influential in music education circles throughout the United States and Canada.

Why we love this

These arrangements strike the rare balance of being genuinely accessible without sacrificing musicality. The keyboard part provides harmonic richness and support while remaining simple enough that a pianist at any level can execute it confidently, leaving players and directors free to focus on the ensemble sound rather than managing technical complications.

What to expect

These arrangements radiate warmth and festive spirit while honoring the character of each carol. The lush accompaniment tracks add orchestral color and sophistication that transforms simple melodies into fuller, more polished performances.

Who it's for

Tuba players at the easy-medium level who want to perform something substantial beyond solo literature. This collection works well for school concert ensembles, community bands, church services, or flexible holiday programs where tuba doubling and keyboard support are readily available.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the two tuba parts by having the lower tuba anchor the bass line while the upper tuba carries the melody; adjust dynamic roles from piece to piece rather than keeping them static throughout the arrangement.
  • Use the free orchestral accompaniment tracks to add texture and stylistic authenticity without requiring additional instrumentalists; test audio levels during rehearsal to ensure the recorded accompaniment doesn't overwhelm the live tubas.
  • Pay close attention to the keyboard voicings, which often color the harmonic character of each carol; a light touch and attention to pedal technique will enhance the warmth these arrangements bring to familiar melodies.

How to use it

Program these throughout a holiday concert rather than grouping them all together; the variety of sacred and secular selections allows you to build thematic sets that work with the flow and pacing of your overall program. A single arrangement or pair of arrangements can stand effectively as an interlude between larger ensemble pieces, and the free accompaniment tracks make them equally suitable for church services where full accompaniment resources may be limited.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading music in different keys and time signatures
  • Playing balanced duet parts with contrasting melodic and harmonic roles
  • Responding to keyboard accompaniment and playing in ensemble with non-brass instruments
  • Interpreting stylistic nuance in familiar holiday melodies
  • Performing with recorded backing tracks and maintaining ensemble cohesion
