About the Arranger: Vince Gassi

Vince Gassi

Vince Gassi has been composing and arranging for music education since earning his Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Ontario. His training at the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, followed by a Ph.D. from York University in Toronto, shaped his distinctive approach to writing for young ensembles. Over more than two decades teaching instrumental music at the elementary and secondary levels, he developed a reputation for creating works that balance accessibility with genuine musical substance.

With over 100 published titles in circulation, Gassi's energetic compositional voice appears regularly on contest and concert programs across North America, Europe, and Japan. He serves frequently as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician, and leads workshops on creative engagement and digital workflows for music directors. His arrangements and original compositions are celebrated for unlocking student musicians' enthusiasm while maintaining artistic integrity.

Why we love this

This collection puts accessible holiday literature directly into the hands of your young saxophonists without sacrificing musicality. The pairing of two alto saxophones with keyboard creates a warm, blended sound that works beautifully for both formal concerts and casual holiday performances, and the free orchestral accompaniment tracks elevate even simple melodies into something genuinely polished.

What to expect

Warm and celebratory. These familiar carols and holiday songs settle comfortably in the alto saxophone's sweet register, with straightforward rhythms that let the players focus on phrasing and blend rather than technical hurdles. The keyboard foundation and orchestral accompaniment create a fuller, more sophisticated sound than the individual lines might suggest.

Who it's for

Alto saxophonists in middle or high school bands who need accessible holiday repertoire that sounds polished and festive. Duet ensembles and small chamber groups will also find these arrangements ideal for church services, school assemblies, or holiday open houses.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the two alto lines carefully during rehearsal; since they carry the melody throughout, uneven volume or rhythmic independence will stand out immediately.
  • Prepare your keyboard player ahead of time with the free accompaniment tracks so they can rehearse blend and tempo locks before full ensemble rehearsals begin.
  • Layer the orchestral track under your rehearsals early to help saxophonists internalize the harmonic context and phrasing that will support their lines.
  • Mark dynamic shifts in the score during the first read-through; these familiar melodies invite the saxophonists to coast, so active conducting and clear markups will maintain musical shape.

How to use it

Thread these arrangements throughout your December calendar as concert openers, encores, or entire holiday sets. They work equally well in a formal winter concert, a church holiday service, or as standalone pieces for a school assembly. The ten selections give you flexibility to program just one piece or build an entire mini-suite.

Skills your students will build

  • Listening and blending two equal saxophone voices
  • Stylistic phrasing of familiar melodies
  • Playing confidently with recorded accompaniment tracks
  • Reading keyboard parts and understanding harmonic support
  • Sight-reading in easy-to-moderate difficulty across multiple carol and song styles
