About the Arranger: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock earned degrees at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels in Music Education, establishing himself as a musician with deep pedagogical training. His career spans performance (trumpet work with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, plus regional and national touring bands), composition, arrangement, and teaching. Over 20 years in the classroom and seven years as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department, Bullock developed a keen understanding of what young ensembles need.

As a prolific arranger and composer with more than 600 publications to his name, Bullock has written across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band repertoire. He co-authored the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and contributed arrangements to Music Expressions, Alfred Music's innovative school music curriculum. His work has earned recognition in major music industry publications, and he has been an ASCAP member since 1980.

Why we love this

Bullock's arrangement keeps the integrity of this beloved carol intact while making it genuinely playable for developing string orchestras. The Grade 2 writing gives every section meaningful material without overwhelming younger players, and the piano accompaniment provides harmonic support that allows strings to focus on ensemble blend and intonation.

What to expect

Warm and reverent without heaviness, this arrangement captures the wonder embedded in the carol's famous opening. The straightforward string writing lets the song's natural beauty breathe, creating a performance that feels genuine and heartfelt rather than decorative.

Who it's for

Beginning to early intermediate string orchestras performing at the Grade 2 level. This arrangement suits groups with mixed experience where players need a confident, singable piece that honors a recognizable melody without demanding virtuosic technique.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody between first violins and the rest of the orchestra so the carol's familiar tune remains the focal point throughout.
  • Bring out the lyrical quality of the Christmas text by shaping phrases as if singing the words, even in purely instrumental passages.
  • Use the piano accompaniment to anchor the ensemble's tempo and harmonic foundation, particularly in moments where string voices divide.
  • Work through the parts separately to ensure each section locks onto its rhythmic figure before blending them together.

How to use it

Program this during a winter concert or holiday assembly where you want to honor a familiar carol in a fresh orchestral setting. The accessible Grade 2 difficulty makes it a strong anchor piece that shows developing musicians' musicality while remaining accessible to community audiences.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrase shaping and lyrical phrasing in a sacred context
  • Blend and balance in string divisi sections
  • Intonation work in thirds and other harmonic intervals
  • Coordinating with piano accompaniment
  • Reading and performing in multiple keys within a single piece
