About the Composer: William Owens

William Owens has shaped the landscape of young band repertoire for decades through his prolific output and pedagogically astute compositional voice. A native of Gary, Indiana, and graduate of VanderCook College of Music, Owens has maintained an active presence as a composer, clinician, and conductor throughout North America. Since 1993, he has created over 300 works for concert band, string orchestra, and small ensemble; his pieces appear on contest lists and required music selections across the country and have been cited in educational texts as exemplars of accessible yet substantive writing for developing musicians.

After 30 years as a band director in Texas, Owens brought his classroom experience directly to his compositions, resulting in music that demands musicianship without sacrificing playability. He holds membership in ASCAP, the Texas Music Educators Association, and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, and has received commissions from the American Bandmasters Association, South Plains College, and other leading institutions. His alma mater recognizes him as a Distinguished Alumnus, and the Texas Bandmasters Association awarded him the Meritorious Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to the field.
