About the Composer: JaRod Hall

JaRod Hall

JaRod Hall brings a distinctive voice to band composition grounded in real classroom experience. A native Texan trained at the University of North Texas and Texas State University, he spent eight years directing concert and sightreading ensembles that earned consistent sweepstakes recognition at UIL evaluations. His middle school band made history in 2018 as the first in Frisco ISD to win the state Citation of Excellence, a distinction awarded to only the top two non-varsity programs annually.

Beyond the podium, Hall is a versatile performer who has played principal tuba with Texas State Wind Symphony and performed with the North Texas Wind Symphony, the 3 O'Clock Lab Band, and numerous regional ensembles. He earned four consecutive Texas All-State Band selections, including principal chair as a jazz trombonist. His compositions have landed on the Texas Prescribed Music List, earned the 2021 Barbara Buehlman Prize, and been recognized on the J.W. Pepper Editors' Choice and Bandworld Top 100 lists.

Why we love this

Hall crafts the kind of opener that energizes a concert from the first measure, and the Grade 2.5 accessibility means your students can execute the exciting material without stumbling through technical complexity. The mid-voice focus creates a refreshing textural anchor that lets brass and percussion enhance rather than carry the sound, giving you orchestration options that work for bands of various sizes. This is exactly the sort of confident, immediate impact you want for contest season or when you need a piece that builds momentum without demanding weeks of intensive rehearsal.

What to expect

Spiritus Invictus announces itself with bright, invincible energy. The writing radiates confidence without bombast, letting themes build through layering and orchestration rather than brute force. Two minutes of spirited momentum that leaves audiences wanting more.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 2.5 level seeking a contest or festival opener with genuine musical substance and immediate impact. Directors working with middle school and young high school ensembles will find a piece that challenges intonation and precision without overwhelming developing musicians.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the mid-voice leadership so those parts cut through without overwhelming the ensemble; use sectional rehearsals to lock in the harmonic foundation before adding outer voices.
  • Shape the two-minute arc with intentional dynamic gestures, especially at theme transitions, so the piece feels like a complete statement rather than a series of events.
  • Ensure precision in rhythmic entrances during the fanfare sections, as clarity in attacks will amplify the invincible spirit Hall writes into the piece.
  • Leverage the PerformancePlus+ assignment and assessment tools to diagnose technique and rhythm patterns before full ensemble rehearsal, maximizing sectional time efficiency.

How to use it

Open your concert with this fanfare to set an energetic tone immediately, or place it as a closer to leave the audience on a high note. For contest preparation, the contained length and clear musical narrative make it ideal for pairing with a longer concert work or sightreading selection in the same program.

Skills your students will build

  • Precise rhythmic entrances in fanfare textures
  • Balancing ensemble sound with moving harmonic voices
  • Phrasing and dynamic shaping across a compact arc
  • Sectional coordination in multi-voice arrangements
