About the Artist: Carey Cheney

Carey Cheney

Carey Cheney brings three decades of performing and teaching experience to her work with cellists. She has served as principal cellist and section member with major orchestras including the Austin Symphony, Savannah Symphony, Knoxville Chamber Orchestra, and Utah Symphony, while also maintaining an active chamber music presence. Since 2000, she has led Suzuki teacher training and enrichment courses through the Suzuki Association of the Americas, designing specialized seminars on topics ranging from the Bach Suites to bowing techniques to supplementary repertoire.

Cheeney's work as a researcher and advocate for cello pedagogy spans 25 years. She regularly presents at workshops, clinics, and international conferences across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, including the World Suzuki Convention, the National Suzuki Association Conference of Australia, and the ESTA National Conference. Her publications with Alfred Music, including the complete eight-volume Solos for Young Cellists series, reflect her commitment to building thoughtfully curated repertoire that serves both emerging and accomplished young players.

Why we love this

This is a recording from someone who understands what cellists at this level actually need to hear. Cheney's decades of teaching experience mean the interpretations model musical maturity and sound quality without overshadowing the student's own musical voice. Having the accompaniment tracks on the same disc removes the friction of coordinating separate materials, letting students focus entirely on learning to play with a partner.

What to expect

The pieces span Baroque formality (Handel's structured elegance), French character dance (Bazelaire's rhythmic charm), and Romantic expressivity (Cui's shimmering colors), held together by consistent musicianship and clarity. Cheney's playing is authoritative without rigidity, giving each work room to breathe while maintaining its essential character.

Who it's for

Young cellists working through intermediate repertoire who benefit from hearing professional-quality interpretations of their study material. Students preparing for recitals, exams, or ensemble experiences will find both musical reference and practical accompaniment support on this single disc.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start by playing along with the recorded accompaniment to internalize the harmonic framework and stylistic character of each piece before refining your own interpretation.
  • Listen for how Cheney shapes phrases and breathes in your part; her recordings serve as a reference for musical architecture, not a template to copy exactly.
  • Use the accompaniment track to work on ensemble balance and timing, paying attention to how the cello line sits within the texture rather than dominating it.
  • Record yourself playing along with the track and listen back to identify spots where your entries, phrasing, or rhythmic placement shift relative to the piano.

How to use it

Program these pieces in student recitals or jury performances; having a recorded accompaniment means students can perform polished, full-textured works even in settings without access to an accompanist. The variety of styles and technical approaches also makes this collection valuable for building a balanced solo repertoire across a season of lessons.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing across multiple positions and navigating position changes fluidly
  • Performing multiple Baroque, French, and Romantic styles with stylistic clarity
  • Working with piano accompaniment and responding to ensemble partners
  • Reading music in various meters, keys, and technical idioms at intermediate level
  • Interpreting character pieces and developing independent musical phrasing
