About the Arranger: Bill Galliford

Bill Galliford has shaped instrumental music publishing for over three and a half decades as Director of Instrumental Solo Strategy at Alfred Music. His arranging work spans every musical genre, from classical standards to some of cinema's most iconic scores, making his transcriptions staples in school music programs and private studios alike.
Beyond arrangement, Galliford has co-authored several Instrumental Solo Play-along editions that have guided countless students through their musical development. His ability to adapt repertoire for flexible instrumentation reflects a deep understanding of what teachers and students actually need in the classroom.
Why we love this
Horn players rarely get this many patriotic options written specifically for their instrument at an accessible level. Galliford's arrangement of 16 beloved marches and hymns preserves their character while the flexible three-part structure means a solo hornist, a pair, or a full trio can all find their place without feeling like they're missing something essential.
What to expect
Marching energy mixed with ceremonial weight. These pieces move with the confidence of Sousa's brass band tradition while maintaining the reverence of military hymns and national songs. Whether you're tackling the bold swagger of The Yankee Doodle Boy or the solemn dignity of The Star-Spangled Banner, there's an immediate sense of occasion and tradition.
Who it's for
Horn players in middle school band and high school ensembles, private lesson students preparing for recitals or assessments, and teachers looking to build small chamber groups from their larger ensembles. The Grade 2-3 level keeps the technical focus manageable while the patriotic context makes these pieces ideal for concert programming tied to national holidays or community events.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance phrase length across the three parts if you're playing a trio; the melody line often carries longer phrases, so the supporting parts can breathe and support without overplaying.
- Adjust articulation to match the style of each piece. Patriotic songs marked with a march character benefit from crisp, clean tonguing; hymns like Amazing Grace and Eternal Father, Strong to Save call for legato and sustained phrasing.
- Use the TNT 2 software to slow tempos during rehearsal, especially on pieces like The Stars and Stripes Forever where the technical passages need clarity before playing at performance speed.
- When selecting which parts to play, consider the range demands of each piece. Some horns will sit more comfortably on Part 1 (melody) while others might prefer the middle register of Part 2 or 3.
How to use it
Open a patriotic concert or veterans appreciation event with a medley or a single march from this collection. The Armed Forces Medley works especially well as a concert centerpiece, or slot individual pieces throughout a program as tonal bookends between contrasting styles. For younger horn players building chamber experience, assign parts flexibly and rotate players to let everyone experience melody, harmony, and accompaniment roles.
Skills your students will build
- Playing in mixed small ensembles (solo, duet, and trio formations)
- Balancing tone and volume across different instrumental combinations
- Sustaining long phrases typical of hymn accompaniment
- Clean articulation in march tempos with repeated figures
- Reading and adjusting to three-part texture changes within a single piece
