More about this title

About the Composer: Kim Williams

Kim Williams

Kim Williams earned degrees in Religion and Piano Pedagogy from Oklahoma City University, where she discovered her passion for composition through mentorship from her instructors. She began publishing music in 1998 and has since built a career balancing private studio teaching, group piano instruction, and active composing.

Beyond her work at the keyboard, Williams has taught group piano at the University of Central Oklahoma, directed a composition piano camp for her students, and presented workshops on composition to music teacher associations throughout Oklahoma. She remains deeply involved in her professional community as an active member of Music Teachers National Association and the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association. Her published works with Alfred Music include piano solos and choral music, all written with the conviction that music can genuinely connect with and shape a student's musical growth.

Why we love this

This piece captures the playful mischief of its title without resorting to cheap tricks or oversimplification. The writing feels genuinely composed for the elementary student hand, respecting both technical boundaries and musical intelligence. It's the kind of piece that leaves students grinning at the keyboard and eager to learn what comes next.

What to expect

Sneaky Surprise lives up to its name with a sense of playful mischief that builds throughout. The piece has lightness and wit, with a musical twist that rewards careful listening and clever timing.

Who it's for

Elementary pianists who are ready for repertoire that entertains them as much as it challenges them musically. This piece works well for students who enjoy character pieces and respond to music with personality and humor.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work out the surprise element deliberately during practice; knowing where the unexpected moment lands helps you nail the timing and impact when you perform it.
  • Pay attention to any dynamic contrasts that set up the twist. Building or releasing tension before the surprise makes the payoff land harder.
  • Record yourself playing it at performance tempo and listen back. You'll hear where the pacing could tighten or where a moment needs breathing room.

How to use it

This solo fits naturally into a recital where you want to shift the mood and keep an audience engaged. Place it strategically to break up longer or more serious pieces, or pair it with other character works that showcase your students' range of expression beyond classical forms.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing rhythmic surprises and unexpected accents
  • Controlling dynamics to build tension toward a musical payoff
  • Developing musical storytelling and character interpretation at the elementary level
  • Balancing technical clarity with expressive intent in a short form
