About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober composes piano music with a clear pedagogical mission: to create pieces that deepen her students' musicianship while genuinely engaging them. She holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (summa cum laude) and a Master of Arts in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, where she studied with noted pianists Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich.

Beyond her private studio teaching, Bober brings two decades of public school experience and university-level instruction to her work as a composer and clinician. She remains active as a church pianist and has served as a music director, drawing on these real-world contexts to inform her writing. Her reputation as both an innovative composer and dynamic workshop presenter has made her a frequent presence at piano teacher conventions and professional development events throughout North America.

Why we love this

Bober captures the essential character of a sleighride without resorting to shallow arrangement. The technical demands (cross-hand arpeggios, interlocking tremolo) emerge naturally from the musical content, asking students to build real facility rather than simply work through exercises. The melody's migration between hands creates genuine ensemble satisfaction even in a solo context.

What to expect

Joyous and kinetic, with the sparkle of sleigh bells cutting through a warmer, singing melodic line. The piece captures motion and celebration, with the interplay between hands creating a sense of playful energy that builds naturally from the rhythmic opening to the fuller texture throughout.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists (roughly late elementary to early middle-level students) looking for holiday repertoire with genuine musical substance. This piece rewards players who have solid hand independence and comfort with basic arpeggiation, giving them a genuinely festive showcase rather than a novelty arrangement.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the staccato jingles with rhythmic precision and light touch; they need to sound like the bells themselves, not a mechanical ostinato.
  • Balance the interlocking tremolo so both hands maintain equal weight and clarity. Practice slowly to establish hand independence before adding tempo.
  • Let the main melody sing when it passes between your hands. Adjust dynamic slightly to highlight the line's journey, keeping listeners oriented as it travels.
  • Test your hand crossing in the arpeggios at performance tempo. Mark your preferred fingering and practice the transitions until they feel invisible.

How to use it

Pair this with other Bober pieces or mid-level holiday solos for a December student recital. It works equally well as a concert opener or as part of a mixed holiday programming set, offering an energetic contrast to slower or more traditional yuletide selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Cross-hand arpeggios and hand independence across the keyboard
  • Interlocking tremolo technique between hands
  • Melodic shaping and phrasing across hand positions
  • Rhythmic clarity in staccato accompaniment figures
  • Tempo control and balance between multiple simultaneous lines
