More about this title

About the Composer: Roxanna Panufnik

Roxanna Panufnik is a Polish-British composer whose work spans orchestral, choral, and chamber music with a distinctive gift for crafting accessible, deeply felt pieces. Her compositions often draw on her multicultural heritage and interest in world music, bringing fresh perspectives to both traditional forms and contemporary choral writing.

Why we love this

Panufnik's arrangement honors the gentle, rocking character of this Ukrainian lullaby while making it genuinely singable for mixed choirs of varying experience levels. The flexibility to perform as full SATB, unison throughout, or with an optional descant finale means you can scale the piece to match your ensemble's needs and still land a deeply affecting carol.

What to expect

There's a tender, almost meditative quality here, the kind of carol that makes you slow down rather than speed up. The gentle rocking motion feels like a hand steadying a cradle, and the harmonies have warmth without sentimentality. It's reverent without being austere.

Who it's for

This carol suits mixed choirs preparing for Christmas services, multicultural concert programming, or anyone wanting a carol that moves beyond the familiar Anglo-American tradition. It works equally well for established choirs seeking fresh repertoire and developing ensembles grateful for the unison option.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the gentle rocking motion through consistent, subtle dynamic shaping in the piano or organ part; avoid letting it become metronomic or static.
  • If performing the optional descant in the final verse, rehearse the soprano line separately first, then layer it gradually with the full SATB texture beneath.
  • Consider how the choice between English text and Ukrainian descant affects your performance intent; each carries different resonance for your audience.
  • Balance the choir's sound to let the lullaby character emerge; this works best when singers stay connected to the gentle arc rather than pushing for volume.

How to use it

Pair this with other world carol settings or place it as a quiet interlude within a larger Christmas service. Its brief duration (3.5 minutes) and intimate character make it ideal for creating a moment of reflection within a program of more energetic festive music.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with sustained legit tone through rocking, repetitive patterns
  • Balancing SATB blend in close harmonic writing
  • Navigating the optional descant as an overlay to existing full texture
  • Performing text in both English and Ukrainian with clear diction
  • Understanding lullaby style and how gentle dynamic shaping shapes phrasing
