About the Composer: Carl Johengen

Carl Johengen is a composer, conductor, and educator whose liturgical and secular works have been performed and recorded across the United States. His compositional voice emerged into national recognition in 1993 when his piece Veni Creator Spiritus won first prize in a major composition competition and was premiered at the National Association of Pastoral Musicians convention; that work was subsequently recorded by the William Ferris Chorale. His output spans sacred choral music, hymn writing, opera for young audiences, and secular compositions published by leading church music houses including GIA Publications, Hope Publishing Co., and Selah Publishing Co.

Beyond composition, Johengen has shaped choral music through conducting and teaching. He has served as faculty at institutions including the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, Ithaca College, and Syracuse University, and brings decades of clinician experience to regional and national church musicians' conventions. He remains active as a choral director working across churches, festivals, and community ensembles, and has taught at the Berkshire Choral Festival since 2000.
