About the Author: Elizabeth Gilpatrick

Elizabeth Gilpatrick

Elizabeth Gilpatrick holds degrees in Music Education and Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with Orff certification from Northern Arizona University. She spent nearly three decades as a public school music specialist in Boulder Valley, Colorado, and now directs the Summer Orff Schulwerk Training programs at the University of Northern Colorado, where she also teaches.

Gilpatrick has been a steady voice in Orff education circles for over nine years as a member of The Orff Echo editorial board, serving as Interim Editor during 2001-2002. Her work as a composer of children's choral materials and her regular appearances as a clinician at All-State festivals, Orff training courses, and workshops across the US and Canada reflect her deep commitment to classroom music pedagogy.

Why we love this

This handbook delivers exactly what busy elementary teachers need: 41 ready-to-use songs that teach content while building vocal skills, without requiring hours of preparation. The reproducible format and lay-flat binding mean you can grab a page and teach it immediately, while the mix of rounds, canons, partner songs, and short selections keeps your daily instruction fresh across multiple grade levels.

What to expect

Playful, purposeful, and grounded in real classroom experience. These songs balance genuine musical content with thematic connections to health, science, history, and social-emotional learning, so singers feel they're learning something meaningful while enjoying the act of singing together.

Who it's for

Elementary classroom music teachers (K-5) who need an accessible, practical collection of songs that integrate music learning with other curriculum areas. This handbook also works well for music specialists seeking partner songs and rounds that engage young singers across multiple grade levels without heavy arranging.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the suggested activities included for each song; they transform a simple singing exercise into a memorable learning moment that connects music to the classroom curriculum.
  • Layer in Orff accompaniments gradually as students gain confidence with their vocal lines; this scaffolds both musical independence and ensemble awareness.
  • Use the reproducible pages to send songs home with families; students who sing rounds and partner songs outside the classroom internalize parts more quickly and return eager to perform them.

How to use it

Integrate these songs throughout your year as warm-ups, curricular connectors, and performance material; a round about the water cycle works perfectly during a science unit, while a friendship partner song becomes a community-building moment during back-to-school. The reproducible format also makes these ideal for all-school sing-alongs or grade-level performances.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing two-part and multi-part textures (rounds, canons, partner songs)
  • Sustaining independent vocal lines while hearing other parts
  • Sight-reading melody with chord symbols
  • Following a conductor and understanding ensemble entry points
  • Connecting musical concepts to academic content across subject areas
