More about this title

About the Composer: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned a Bachelor of Music in organ performance and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He serves as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and has established himself as one of the most prolific choral composers working today, with more than 500 published compositions across sacred, secular, educational, and pop genres.

Moore's work spans choral octavos, organ and piano pieces, music collections, and eight instructional books published by major houses including Alfred, Hal Leonard, Heritage Music Press, and others. His compositions regularly appear at state and regional festivals, and he has been recognized with seventeen ASCAP Composers Standard Awards. In 2023, the American Choral Directors Association Choral Journal identified him as one of 400 seminal composers in the history of American choral music.

Why we love this

Moore brings genuine warmth to this traditional Christmas text without overshadowing it. The recorded accompaniment frees your choir to focus on intonation and blend, making this accessible for groups of varying experience levels while maintaining musical integrity.

What to expect

The piece radiates genuine joy without sentimentality. Moore's straightforward harmonic language and clear textures let the text shine, creating a musical setting that feels both reverent and celebratory.

Who it's for

This works for intermediate to advanced choral ensembles preparing Christmas services or holiday concerts. It suits churches, school choirs, and community choruses seeking quality sacred repertoire that connects to both tradition and contemporary performance practice.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the recorded accompaniment establish a steady tempo before the first entrance; this is especially helpful if your rehearsal time is limited.
  • Shape the phrase endings gently; resist the urge to cut off abruptly on the final syllables.
  • Balance the harmony parts carefully in sections where inner voices carry important melodic content.

How to use it

Place this early in a Christmas concert to set a bright, welcoming tone, or use it as a confident closer that sends the audience out with energy. It pairs naturally with other traditional carols or more elaborate contemporary Christmas works.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing blend and balance across four parts
  • Intonation clarity in harmonic progressions
  • Phrasing with attention to text declamation
  • Following a recorded accompaniment in rehearsal and performance
