About the Composer: Jill Gallina

Jill Gallina

Jill Gallina, in collaboration with her husband Michael, has built a reputation for creating music and musical theater that resonates with young singers across all grade levels. Their compositions have earned recognition from the Parents Choice Foundation, American Library Service, and ASCAP, and their work has appeared on The Disney Channel, PBS, and stages at The New York Philharmonic and Boston Pops. Jill holds a B.A. in music from the College of New Jersey and spent years as an elementary music teacher before dedicating herself to full-time composition.

The Gallinas' output has reached millions of singers worldwide, with their pieces performed thousands of times annually in schools and concert halls. Both recipients of the Stanley Austin Alumni Award from their alma mater, they continue to lead educator workshops and shape music programs across English-speaking countries through compositions that educate, enlighten, and engage young musicians with sophisticated creativity and accessibility.

Why we love this

Gallina writes for young voices with genuine understanding of what singers at this level can accomplish. The text choice and melodic arc create natural momentum that keeps singers engaged without requiring technical gymnastics, making this an excellent selection for ensembles building confidence in three-part voicing.

What to expect

Warm affirmation wrapped in bright harmonies. The piece radiates encouragement and hope without sentimentality, inviting singers to genuinely embody the message rather than simply perform it.

Who it's for

Treble choirs at middle school through high school level will find accessible yet meaningful material here. This works equally well for secular programs seeking spiritually uplifting repertoire and for faith-based ensembles looking for contemporary gospel-influenced writing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the joyful spirit through tempo; resist dragging even in softer passages, as the text energy demands forward motion throughout
  • Balance the SSA voicing by having sopranos sing with clarity on the melody line while altos provide harmonic support without oversinging
  • Encourage singers to connect the word painting to physical gesture; "sing" and "joyful" should feel different in the body and voice

How to use it

Pair this with other spiritually themed pieces to create a concert segment on hope and community, or use it as a closing number that leaves audiences with infectious optimism. The nine-page length makes it substantial enough to anchor a concert moment without overwhelming rehearsal schedules.

Skills your students will build

  • Three-part SSA/SSAA voicing independence
  • Connecting text expression to melodic and harmonic choices
  • Building sustain and resonance in upper register voices
  • Balancing ensemble blend while maintaining individual voice part clarity
