About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and earned his master's degree in the same field from the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. A competition winner and recording artist, he has performed solo recitals across the United States and Mexico, including performances with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra and broadcasts of his work from historic venues.

Today Martin channels his performance background into composing and arranging music for worship and concert settings. His catalog spans an impressive range of styles and contexts, from Carnegie Hall to church sanctuaries across North America. Based in Austin, Texas, he continues to be an active presence in both concert performance and the church music community.

Why we love this

The patter text here captures genuine theatrical flair without requiring your singers to be comic performers. Martin's gift for singable melody paired with clever, rhythmic text creates something that feels both festive and musically sophisticated. The orchestration options give you real flexibility: you can realize this with a full orchestra, dial it back to chamber forces, or even lean into an acoustic folk ensemble.

What to expect

Bright and buoyant, with the snap of folk tradition filtered through theatrical storytelling. The text moves with real momentum while the melody sits comfortably in the voice, letting singers enjoy both the music and the personality of what they're singing.

Who it's for

This works for choirs at any size with access to instrumental accompaniment, whether that means a full orchestra, a pickup ensemble, or a skilled chamber group. Directors planning concert closers or holiday services will find this particularly valuable.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat the patter sections with the same rhythmic precision you would a comic opera number. Clarity in diction matters more than vocal power.
  • Balance the choir's tuning carefully against the accompaniment. The folk-based harmonic language reads best when intonation is locked in.
  • Use whichever orchestration matches your ensemble. None of the options compromises the piece; they simply shift the color and energy.

How to use it

Reserve this for a closing spot in your holiday concert or service where you want to leave the room with genuine joy rather than reverence. The multiple orchestration options mean you can program it whether your full complement is rehearsed or you're working with available musicians.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic clarity in patter sections
  • Diction control within faster-moving text
  • Balancing choral blend against folk-based harmonic language
  • Ensemble coordination across mixed instrumental combinations
