About the Arranger: Mary K. Sallee

Mary K. Sallee

Mary K. Sallee brings decades of practical teaching experience to her arrangements and compositions. She holds degrees in piano and voice from the University of Oklahoma, including a master's in piano performance and pedagogy, and spent a year studying at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. Since 1986, she has maintained a private piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, where she specializes in working with adult learners.

Beyond the studio, Sallee has shaped the broader music education landscape as a festival organizer, adjudicator, clinician, and former MTNA Director. She has published over 60 compositions and arrangements, many of which appear on the National Federation of Music Clubs list. Her work spans piano solos, vocal and choral music, and jazz ensemble pieces. She remains active as a church musician, accompanist, and ensemble performer.

Why we love this

Sallee's arrangements preserve the essential character and melodic beauty of these masterworks while genuinely serving pianists still building technique and confidence. The inclusion of detailed phrase markings, fingerings, and pedaling guidance transforms these pieces from intimidating standards into playable, musical experiences that motivate students to engage with the Classical repertoire they hear about but rarely encounter in lesson books.

What to expect

Opening this book is like stepping into a carefully curated gallery of Classical elegance. Familiar melodies from symphonies, sonatas, and operas unfold with clarity and grace, letting you inhabit the architectural beauty and emotional directness that defined an era. Each piece breathes with restraint and structure, inviting you to discover how much musical character lives in simplicity.

Who it's for

This collection works for pianists at the early-intermediate level who want to experience recognizable Classical masterworks without the technical or interpretive demands of the originals. Adult learners and younger students preparing for recitals will find pieces that feel substantial and rewarding while remaining achievable.

How to get the most out of it

  • Observe the pedaling suggestions closely; they guide you through harmonic changes that define the Classical style while preventing muddiness in easier registers.
  • Use the phrase markings to shape each melodic line with purpose. Even simplified arrangements benefit from clear breathing points and dynamic direction.
  • Pay attention to articulation markings, which often distinguish between Classical elegance and overly modern touch. Crisp staccatos and sustained legatos matter just as much as the notes themselves.

How to use it

Program individual pieces as part of a student recital to give younger pianists and adult learners access to the same repertoire canon their more advanced peers perform. The variety of styles within a single collection makes it ideal for themed recitals exploring different composers or for adding depth to a program that balances original difficulty levels across performers.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading large-format notation with confidence
  • Interpreting Classical phrase structure and articulation
  • Pedaling technique through guided application in harmonic context
  • Recognizing and performing different stylistic gestures (dance forms, operatic themes, symphonic subjects)
  • Building independence on familiar melodies while managing technical simplification
