About the Arranger: Margaret Goldston

Margaret Goldston

Margaret Goldston (1932-2003) was a composer, arranger, and studio teacher based in North Carolina who worked with pianists across all levels throughout her career. She studied piano performance at Louisiana State University and later pursued private composition study with Robert Ward, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. Her contributions to music education were recognized through numerous honors, including Composer of the Year awards from the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs in 1983 and 1994, and a posthumous Foundation Fellow designation from the Music Teachers National Association in 2020.

Beyond her compositional work, Goldston was known as a clinician and presenter, conducting masterclasses and workshops across the United States and Canada. Her practical approach to writing for students of varying abilities made her work a staple in piano studios and festivals. Her pieces remain frequently featured on NFMC Junior Festival lists and other contest bulletins, testament to her understanding of what engages young pianists.

Why we love this

Goldston understood exactly what first and second-year students need: recognizable melodies from the concert repertoire packaged at a level where they can actually succeed. These arrangements preserve the character and charm of the originals while clearing away the technical obstacles, giving young pianists genuine musical satisfaction rather than frustration.

What to expect

Opening this book feels like stepping into a concert hall on a manageable scale. Each excerpt carries the elegance and sophistication of classical, Romantic, and operatic tradition, but without the technical barriers that would make them inaccessible. Students experience the satisfaction of performing real music from real composers.

Who it's for

This collection serves first and second-year piano students who are ready for repertoire beyond method books but need arrangements that respect their technical level. It works equally well in private studios, group lessons, and festival preparation, offering students the confidence boost of performing recognizable masterworks.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the style markings carefully; each excerpt carries the fingerprint of its original period, and respecting those details transforms a simplified arrangement into authentic musical storytelling.
  • Listen to recordings of the original orchestral or operatic versions before performing your arrangement. Hearing the full context helps you understand phrasing, balance, and the role your melodic line played in the larger work.
  • Shape phrases by thinking about the voice leading underneath the main melody. Even in simplified writing, these arrangements often contain inner voices that support and enhance the top line.
  • Take time with pedal changes. At this level, students are still developing pedal control, and these excerpts offer good opportunities to practice clean, purposeful pedal work without overwhelming technical demands elsewhere.

How to use it

Include these selections in student recitals to give your performers meaningful solo repertoire with historical depth. They also work well as supplementary concert openers before full-length pieces, allowing ensemble members who aren't featured in other works to contribute something substantial to the program.

Skills your students will build

  • recognizing and interpreting period-specific performance styles (Baroque, Classical, Romantic)
  • shaping phrase contours across longer melodic lines
  • managing articulation and pedal changes for tonal clarity
  • reading and understanding musical forms represented in orchestral and operatic writing
  • building confidence with established repertoire and composer names
