Description
The works in the Arthur Harris Christmas Series were originally written for orchestra, with several offering the option to add chorus. These transcriptions for band, both by William Silvester or Arthur Harris himself, retain the quality of the original orchestrations, offering bands the optional opportunity to perform with chorus during the Christmas season. Choral scores for each work are available separately. Band series with chorus includes: Silent Night, Joy to the World, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Adeste Fidelis (O Come All Ye Faithful), The First Nowell, O Tannenbaum, and Angels We Have Heard on High. Transcriptions for band alone includes: O Little Town of Bethlehem, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

More about this title

Why we love this

Silvester's transcription honors the original orchestral writing without asking your band to stretch beyond Grade 3 capabilities. The arrangement gives you genuine flexibility: perform it as a pure instrumental work, or add the optional chorus for a fuller holiday sound that transforms the piece entirely.

What to expect

Reverent and warm, with the intimate character of the original carol preserved in the band setting. The arrangement lets the familiar melody breathe without overwhelming your ensemble.

Who it's for

Concert bands looking for holiday repertoire that balances accessibility with musicality. Directors who want a single arrangement that works as a standalone instrumental piece or transforms with the addition of singers.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody across your woodwind and brass sections so the familiar tune cuts through clearly, especially if you're adding chorus later in the season.
  • Pay attention to dynamic shaping in the quieter moments; Grade 3 bands can sometimes rush through soft passages, but restraint here makes the return to full sound more effective.
  • If you're using the optional chorus, begin sectional rehearsals early so the band locks into the tempo and phrasing before voices join.

How to use it

Pair this with other works from the Arthur Harris Christmas Series to build a cohesive holiday concert; the consistent arranging style across the series creates a unified aesthetic. A Grade 3 band can program this alongside slightly more advanced repertoire and hold its own.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing melody and accompaniment textures
  • Shaping lyrical phrasing in a hymn-based melody
  • Sustaining tone quality at soft dynamic levels
  • Coordinating with optional vocal parts when chorus is added
