About the Composer: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell's gift for composition emerged from necessity. A North Carolina native who began piano lessons at age 12, he practiced daily at his aunt and uncle's house since his family didn't yet own an instrument. After his parents purchased a piano a year later, his teenage self naturally progressed from student to creator, drawing inspiration from English literature assignments and accompaniment work with the high school choir.

Hartsell studied music at East Carolina University, but composition didn't become his formal focus until senior year. He taught in a small town after graduation and returned to composing seriously in the early 1980s, encouraged by publisher Lynn Freeman Olson to submit his work. His collaboration with Alfred resulted in the three-book series Something Special (1990), launching a prolific career that now includes over 60 published collections and solos. Today, based in Charlotte, he remains active as a teacher, clinician, adjudicator, accompanist, and church musician.

Why we love this

Hartsell writes with genuine understanding of what motivates young pianists to keep practicing. The lyrical voice here unfolds naturally across just two pages, giving students a complete musical idea without overwhelming them, while the emotional authenticity makes this rewarding to teach.

What to expect

The title evokes a specific moment of natural beauty, and the music captures that sense of gentle awakening. There's a tenderness here that never becomes saccharine, just honest lyricism that unfolds like light across water.

Who it's for

This suits intermediate pianists seeking pieces that develop musicality alongside technical foundation. Teachers value Hartsell's gift for writing that sounds more advanced than it actually is, making it ideal for students building confidence in interpretation.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen for where the melodic line breathes most naturally. Hartsell's lyricism depends on phrase shaping, not technical display, so give yourself permission to stretch slightly at phrase endings.
  • Explore the relationship between hands carefully. The accompaniment should never overshadow the melody, so balance your dynamic approach with this hierarchy in mind.
  • Pay attention to shifts in harmonic color. Even within a short piece, small changes in voicing create expressive moments worth discovering in practice.

How to use it

Pair this with other short character pieces to create a set focused on imagery and tone painting. Its modest length makes it perfect for student recitals or community performances where you want variety without lengthy technical demands.

Skills your students will build
