About the Composer: Tyler S Grant

Tyler S Grant

Tyler S Grant brings extensive experience as a composer and arranger for bands and orchestras across all levels. His works appear regularly on honor ensemble programs nationwide and have earned recognition on prestigious repertoire lists worldwide. His fanfare Panoramic Fanfare won the 2014 Dallas Wind Symphony "Call for Fanfares" Competition and has since been performed by collegiate and professional ensembles throughout North America.

Beyond composition, Grant maintains an active career as a conductor and clinician, having worked with over 100 school instrumental music programs across more than 15 states. He has conducted at The Midwest Clinic and all-state bands in Nebraska, Oregon, Alabama, Louisiana, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Grant earned his bachelor's degree in instrumental music education from the University of Alabama, where he studied conducting with Professor Randall Coleman, and credits mentor Brian Balmages as instrumental to his development as a composer.

Why we love this

Grant writes fanfares that actually work in performance, not just on the page. The music balances accessibility with genuine sophistication; your Grade 2.5-3 ensemble will navigate it cleanly while creating the kind of brilliant sonorities that justify the hype. This is exactly the piece you program to open a concert when you want the audience seated and attentive.

What to expect

Shimmering Joy radiates confidence and brightness from the opening moment. The energy is celebratory and assured, with layered harmonies that catch the light like facets on crystal.

Who it's for

This piece serves Grade 2.5 and 3 concert bands ready to open a festival or contest with something that sounds mature and polished. It works equally well for programs that want a strong opening statement without programming something at Grade 4 or above.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the harmonic layers carefully in rehearsal. Use transparent voicing and highlight the inner parts so the shimmering quality comes through rather than muddying into a thick block.
  • Commit fully to the energy and character from the downbeat. Fanfares live or die on conviction; hesitation reads as uncertainty to the audience.
  • Pay attention to vertical alignment across the sections. Grant's orchestration rewards precision in attacks and cutoffs, which amplifies the brilliant textures he's designed.

How to use it

Program this as your opening fanfare at a contest or festival to establish command of the stage immediately. It also works beautifully as the concert opener on a regular performance, signaling to the audience that your ensemble is prepared and the event is underway.

Skills your students will build

  • Articulate attacks and releases in full ensemble contexts
  • Sustaining harmonic clarity across multiple voice parts
  • Responding to conductor cues for unified dynamic shaping
  • Balancing lyrical and energetic passages within a single form
