More about this title

About the Composer: Penny Rodriguez

Penny Rodriguez

Penny Rodriguez began her musical journey at age 6, learning piano in Peru while her parents worked as missionaries. She pursued formal training at Moody/American Conservatory of Music, earning a degree in piano performance and establishing herself as a pianist, composer, and recording artist.

Over her career, Rodriguez has published numerous piano works and choral compositions. In recent years, she has concentrated on art songs for solo voice and piano, drawing on classic poetry to create thoughtful vocal literature. Her discography includes 11 albums. She resides in the Indianapolis area with her husband, Dave, and finds her greatest fulfillment in time spent with their grandchildren.

Why we love this

Rodriguez's setting of Byron's famous poem brings lyrical sophistication to a text singers and audiences already cherish. The recorded accompaniment frees your singers to focus entirely on the poetic delivery and ensemble blend, making this ideal for festivals and concert programming where precision matters.

What to expect

Romantic and reflective, this setting honors the contemplative beauty of Byron's verse while maintaining accessibility for singers. The music invites thoughtful interpretation rather than spectacular display, creating moments of genuine intimacy in performance.

Who it's for

This octavo suits choirs performing at concerts, festivals, and competitions where literary sophistication enhances the program. It works well for intermediate to advanced ensembles who can manage the poetic demands of the text and maintain ensemble cohesion with recorded accompaniment.

How to get the most out of it

  • Familiarize your choir with Byron's text before introducing the music. Understanding the poem's romantic imagery and philosophical depth will inform how singers approach phrasing and emotional expression.
  • The accompaniment track allows you to rehearse with full piano support from day one, which accelerates learning and helps singers hear their parts in musical context immediately.
  • Emphasize diction as a tool for storytelling. The beauty of the poetry deserves clear, intentional vowels and consonants that let meaning shine through the choir's voice.
  • Use sectional rehearsals to isolate harmonic progressions and ensure blend across parts before running the piece with accompaniment.

How to use it

This piece functions beautifully as a centerpiece for a concert built around romantic poetry or art song traditions. Pair it with instrumental chamber works or other vocal settings of classic texts to create thematic coherence, or place it as a lyrical interlude between more dramatic repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with literary awareness and interpretive intention
  • Ensemble blend and intonation in sustained harmonic passages
  • Following recorded accompaniment while maintaining independent vocal lines
  • Diction clarity in English text with poetic meaning
