About the Composer: Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan studied music education at Oklahoma State University and earned a graduate degree from the University of Oklahoma before spending 28 years directing choral programs in Norman Public Schools. She earned Teacher of the Year honors at West Mid-High School and built four consistently superior-rated choirs at Norman High School, work that culminated in the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association's Director of Distinction Award in 2004.

With over 425 published choral octavos and more than two million copies sold, Drennan has established herself as both a prolific composer and a sought-after clinician, presenting workshops across 19 states and Canada. She has adjudicated choral contests across Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Kansas; served as music and worship arts director at First Baptist Church in Norman; and continues to lead composer weekends and music reading sessions for publishers nationwide.

Why we love this

Drennan's substantial experience directing award-winning choral programs shows in her understanding of what works in the rehearsal room. The piece honors a quiet, introspective kind of devotion without demanding virtuosic technical displays, making it accessible for singers while remaining musically substantial.

What to expect

The piece radiates quiet devotion and contemplative depth. Listeners encounter a musical space where restraint becomes its own eloquence, where the text and sound align to create something genuinely moving rather than showy.

Who it's for

This octavo reaches choirs with solid fundamental technique who are ready to explore repertoire grounded in reverent simplicity. It suits both church music programs seeking substantive sacred material and high school choirs building their concert season with meaningful work.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the harmonic progressions with attention to resolution points; let the choir hear how each phrase builds toward moments of arrival rather than treating them as isolated musical statements.
  • Balance the SATB texture so that no single line dominates unless the score explicitly directs otherwise; this clarity serves the sacred text and allows the emotional weight to emerge from the whole.
  • Establish a tempo that allows singers to breathe naturally between phrases without losing forward momentum; the piece benefits from a sense of gentle but continuous motion.

How to use it

Pair this with other sacred works for a concert focused on stillness and reflection, or use it as a contrasting anchor in a program that moves between different moods and styles. Its 11 pages and straightforward SATB writing make it an ideal choice for mid-season programming when singers have the stamina to deliver nuanced performances.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining pure tone across longer phrases without losing pitch stability
  • Balancing four-part SATB writing with attention to inner voices
  • Interpreting sacred text with emotional authenticity rather than sentimentality
  • Shaping harmonic progressions and understanding voice leading through resolution
