About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department. His career as a concert pianist has taken him across the United States and Mexico, including performances with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra and a nationally broadcast recital from Mexico City.

Today Martin channels his classical training and performance experience into composing and arranging music for worship settings. His catalog spans from concert halls like Carnegie Hall to hundreds of churches across North America, reflecting his commitment to writing music that serves both artistic integrity and congregational need. He makes his home in Austin, Texas with his family.

Why we love this

Martin's orchestration here moves beyond typical anthem accompaniment. The cinematic scope and sweeping melodic architecture create something your musicians will feel invested in learning, not just performing around. The layered instrumentation gives your orchestra something genuinely substantial to play while keeping the choral line at the heart of the drama.

What to expect

Sorrowful and introspective, with moments of intensity that feel earned rather than imposed. The orchestration surrounds the voices in contemplative texture, evoking the weight of prayer and sacrifice without descending into melodrama.

Who it's for

Directors programming Holy Week services or Good Friday observances who want substantial orchestral involvement and choral-instrumental balance. This works equally well for festival performances where you want to highlight both your choir and instrumental ensemble's capabilities.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the opening orchestration establish the emotional landscape before voices enter. The instrumental writing sets the spiritual weight of Gethsemane, so allow it breathing room in rehearsal.
  • Balance the strings and winds carefully in the sweeping gestures. These moments carry the emotional arc, so mark dynamic relationships early rather than leaving them to chance.
  • Coordinate timpani and percussion moments with the conductor's pulse. Even subtle hits need precision to land the cinematic effect Martin intends.
  • If using the smaller consort option, reinforce that reduction choices still preserve the harmonic architecture. Rehearse with awareness of what instruments are carrying which harmonic functions.

How to use it

Position this as a centerpiece in a Holy Week service or concert where you want maximum emotional impact from your combined forces. The dramatic scope makes it a natural anchor point, capable of anchoring a program around themes of redemption or sacrifice.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing choral and instrumental textures in a complex score
  • Sustaining character through longer phrase structures
  • Responding to cinematic compositional gestures
  • Ensemble precision with multiple instrumental sections
  • Understanding harmonic function across orchestral voicings
