Description
Interesting percussion writing and woodwind ostinatos set the stage for this captivating depiction of over 600 large stone statues that stand watch over their desolate Easter Island surroundings, an isolated triangle of volcanic rock located some 2000 miles west of continental Chile in the South Pacific Ocean. This piece makes use of crescendoing lines and forward momentum to keep listeners on the edge of their seats!

About the Composer: Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett joined the University of Oklahoma's music theory and composition faculty in 2001, bringing fifteen years of experience as Assistant Director of Bands. His teaching spans 20th century music theory and composition at both undergraduate and graduate levels, while he continues to arrange music for the Pride of Oklahoma marching band.

Barrett has established himself as a prolific composer and arranger with more than two hundred published works for symphonic band, chamber groups, and marching ensembles. His compositions have reached audiences through performances by the Dallas Wind Symphony, All-State and All-Region honor bands, and broadcasts on NPR and national television. He is a multiple recipient of the ASCAPlus award and has been recognized at major conferences including the Midwest Band & Orchestra Convention and the International Trumpet Guild.

Why we love this

Barrett captures the mysterious, isolated majesty of Easter Island through a Grade 2 score that avoids the typical programmatic clichés. The combination of thoughtful percussion color and layered woodwind ostinatos creates genuine forward momentum without relying on heavy orchestration, making this an engaging choice for young bands working on contest repertoire that rewards musical maturity over technical fireworks.

What to expect

Sentinels captures the stark, watchful presence of those massive stone figures standing alone on volcanic terrain. The music moves with restless energy punctuated by moments of stillness, creating an atmosphere that is both unsettling and compelling, as if the listener is being observed by something ancient and patient.

Who it's for

Grade 2 concert bands preparing for festivals and contests will find strong material here. The piece rewards bands that can balance transparency with control, making it ideal for ensembles ready to tackle programmatic writing with sophistication beyond what their grade level might suggest.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the woodwind ostinatos carefully so they establish the harmonic landscape without obscuring the melodic lines developing above them. Have individual sections rehearse these patterns independently first to build security.
  • Pay attention to the crescendoing lines as structural devices, not just dynamic swells. They should build with purpose and arrive at deliberate moments rather than washing over the entire phrase.
  • Shape the percussion writing to complement the overall color you're creating. These aren't filler elements; they establish the atmosphere and pacing of the work, so rehearse them with the same care you give the winds.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a centerpiece for a concert exploring programmatic band music, positioned alongside pieces that tell visual or narrative stories. It also serves as an effective contest selection for bands looking for repertoire that demonstrates ensemble balance and artistic maturity at the Grade 2 level.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining independent ostinato patterns while maintaining rhythmic precision
  • Shaping crescendos with intentional pacing and control
  • Balancing transparent texture and harmonic support
  • Interpreting programmatic intent through articulation and dynamics
  • Ensemble awareness across woodwind, brass, and percussion sections
