More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged more than 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals now in active performance. His pedagogical resources, including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique, are standard references in many music programs. A tenor vocalist himself, he appears regularly as a guest conductor, choreographer, and clinician for music educators nationwide and has served as both commissioned composer and guest conductor for honor choirs and all-state ensembles throughout the Southeast.

Beck holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Ithaca College and a Master's degree in Music Education from Northwest Missouri State University. His work as an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992, combined with his directing experience in musical theatre and chamber choirs, grounds his compositions in both the classroom and the performance hall. A quick search on YouTube reveals his music being performed by singers across the globe, testament to its accessibility and theatrical appeal.

Why we love this

Beck and his collaborators have crafted a Christmas musical that delivers genuine entertainment without sacrificing musical coherence. The story of Secret Santa gives you a framework for ensemble work that feels intentional rather than obligatory, and the download format means you're rehearsing with the exact accompaniment your students will perform with.

What to expect

Warmth and surprise. The Secret Santa premise carries an authentic note of mystery and generosity, moving past treacly Christmas tropes into genuine human connection. Music by Beck and his team balances accessible melodies with ensemble textures that reward careful rehearsal.

Who it's for

Holiday programs serving elementary through high school choirs or school musical theatre groups looking for a complete, rehearsal-ready performance package. Directors appreciate musicals that require minimal staging decisions while still delivering character development and genuine audience engagement.

How to get the most out of it

  • Load the accompaniment file into your rehearsal technology early so singers can hear the orchestration from day one; this reduces learning time and keeps energy high during initial run-throughs.
  • Mark cue points in the score where the audio shifts between sections or where singers enter after instrumental transitions, giving everyone visual anchors during group rehearsals.
  • Run the full audio file once a week in the weeks before performance so cast members develop confidence performing live alongside the recorded accompaniment rather than hearing it for the first time on stage.

How to use it

Schedule this as your December centerpiece concert, or program it as a special assembly performance if a full concert slot isn't available. The digital format makes it ideal for schools planning in-person or hybrid delivery, since accompaniment is consistent regardless of performance venue.

Skills your students will build

  • Performing with digital accompaniment tracks
  • Ensemble blend and balance across multiple voice parts
  • Character development and dramatic focus in sung dialogue
  • Sustaining energy through extended musical narratives
  • Coordinating singing with staging and choreographed moments
