Description
It is not only the great success of Nathan Evans' re-release of "The Wellerman" on social media that is responsible for the great popularity of sea shanties and naval songs. Such songs create a unique mood, a touch of adventure and wanderlust for the big, wide world. Hardly anyone can elude it and with "Vahid Matejko's Sea Shanty Play-Alongs" there are now the most beautiful sea shanties and naval songs skillfully arranged as an instrumental play-along series for recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet (opt. baritone T.C.), trombone (opt. baritone B.C.), violin, and accordion (piano). The varied arrangements have a wide stylistic range and offer echoes from rock, Latin, funk, big band to orchestral and Caribbean influences. Thus, each song has its own musical and instrumental appeal, to which the parts and/or solos specially composed by arranger Vahid Matejko also contribute. The original polyphonic choral vocals are replaced by polyphonic instrumental backings. Each of the ten titles was recorded live by excellent professional musicians and is available in two different versions: - a demo-track which features a live soprano recorder performance by the German specialist for pop/rock/jazz recorder Tobias Reisige and - a minus-one mix for you to play-along.

More about this title

About the Arranger: Vahid Matejko

Vahid Matejko has established himself as an arranger who understands how to bridge classical instrumental pedagogy with contemporary musical tastes. His work across multiple genres and instrumental combinations shows a keen ear for what engages student musicians while maintaining musical substance.

Matejko's approach to arranging prioritizes accessibility without sacrificing authentic musical character. By crafting parts that sit well for each instrument and creating compelling backings that feature different stylistic flavors, he makes learning an engaging rather than obligatory experience.

Why we love this

These arrangements prove that play-along books don't have to feel like practice drudgery. Each tune carries distinct instrumental colors and genre influences, so your trumpet section stays genuinely curious about what comes next rather than slogging through generic accompaniments. The inclusion of solo material composed specifically for trumpet gives your students real ownership over the music.

What to expect

The arrangements carry genuine adventure without cynicism, capturing the swagger and storytelling of sea shanties while letting each style influence shape the instrumental texture. You'll hear echoes of big band swing, Latin rhythms, and rock edge woven seamlessly into traditional naval song material, creating an experience that feels both rooted and fresh.

Who it's for

Trumpet and baritone T.C. players in middle school through early high school who are ready for more than standard method book material. This collection works equally well for ensemble rehearsals, solo study, or concert programming where you want to engage students with music they recognize and styles that feel contemporary.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the demo track first with your trumpet part in hand; Tobias Reisige's recorder playing sets the melody phrasing and helps you hear the intended articulation and phrasing for each arrangement.
  • Dial in the tempo during your first two rehearsals with the minus-one mix before locking into performance tempo; these stylistic shifts from rock to Latin to big band require rhythmic clarity.
  • Pay particular attention to how the written trumpet solo sits within each arrangement's harmonic backdrop; the interplay between your part and the recorded instruments reveals the arranger's intended balance.
  • Use the optional baritone T.C. parts strategically if you have advanced players; doubling the harmony line adds richness and gives your deeper voices meaningful material.

How to use it

Slot these shanties into a concert celebrating folk traditions, world music, or genre diversity. They also serve as excellent rewards during winter rehearsals when students need something engaging alongside required orchestra repertoire. The optional baritone parts make them flexible enough to feature smaller trumpet sections or provide doubling for fuller sections.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing stylistic shifts within a single piece (rock, Latin, funk, big band, orchestral)
  • Playing confidently over recorded backing tracks with varied harmonic and rhythmic textures
  • Phrasing and articulation coordination across recorded ensemble accompaniment
  • Interpreting composed solo passages that sit within larger harmonic arrangements
  • Adjusting tone and approach to match different musical idioms
