Description
It is not only the great success of Nathan Evans' re-release of "The Wellerman" on social media that is responsible for the great popularity of sea shanties and naval songs. Such songs create a unique mood, a touch of adventure and wanderlust for the big, wide world. Hardly anyone can elude it and with "Vahid Matejko's Sea Shanty Play-Alongs" there are now the most beautiful sea shanties and naval songs skillfully arranged as an instrumental play-along series for recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet (opt. baritone T.C.), trombone (opt. baritone B.C.), violin, and accordion (piano). The varied arrangements have a wide stylistic range and offer echoes from rock, Latin, funk, big band to orchestral and Caribbean influences. Thus, each song has its own musical and instrumental appeal, to which the parts and/or solos specially composed by arranger Vahid Matejko also contribute. The original polyphonic choral vocals are replaced by polyphonic instrumental backings. Each of the ten titles was recorded live by excellent professional musicians and is available in two different versions: - a demo-track which features a live soprano recorder performance by the German specialist for pop/rock/jazz recorder Tobias Reisige and - a minus-one mix for you to play-along.

More about this title

About the Arranger: Vahid Matejko

Vahid Matejko has built a reputation as an arranger who understands how to translate folk material and traditional songs into engaging instrumental settings. His work balances respect for source material with contemporary instrumental writing, making traditional repertoire accessible and playable across multiple ensembles.

Matejko's approach to arrangement emphasizes both individual voice leading and cohesive ensemble sound. His Sea Shanty Play-Alongs series demonstrates particular skill in crafting parts that give each instrument meaningful musical moments while maintaining the character and energy of the original material.

Why we love this

Matejko's arrangements strike an uncommon balance between authentic sea shanty character and genuine instrumental writing that gives trombonists real musical substance rather than mere accompaniment parts. The stylistic variety across these ten titles means you're not locked into one mood or texture; each piece brings its own harmonic color and rhythmic character, from rock-inflected grooves to big band textures to Caribbean lilt. Most importantly, the minus-one tracks let your players hear themselves as soloists in a live ensemble context, which is far more motivating than playing along with a generic backing track.

What to expect

A voyage in sound. These arrangements sweep you into the world of maritime adventure through music that spans rock grooves, Latin rhythms, funk energy, big band sophistication, and orchestral sweep. Each sea shanty has its own personality and instrumentation appeal, yet all of them carry that unmistakable sense of yearning, camaraderie, and salt-spray romance that defines the genre.

Who it's for

Trombonists (or baritone B.C. players) looking for repertoire that bridges popular culture with serious musicianship. These arrangements appeal to intermediate to advanced high school and college students, as well as community ensemble musicians who want substantive play-along material with genuine harmonic and rhythmic interest.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the demo track first to hear how Tobias Reisige's soprano recorder interprets the melody; this reveals phrasing nuances and stylistic inflections that elevate the arrangement beyond the printed page.
  • Match the articulation style of the original choral vocal lines to the instrumental arrangement. Sea shanties rely on rhythmic bite and character in the voice, so bring that same intentionality to your articulation.
  • Use the minus-one mix to lock in with the rhythm section early in rehearsal, then gradually refine phrasing and dynamics once the ensemble is rhythmically secure.
  • Treat the specially composed parts and solos as substantial musical statements, not filler. These lines carry the narrative weight of the arrangement.

How to use it

Feature individual sea shanties as concert openers or transitions between contrasting concert sections. The stylistic range makes it easy to program one piece alongside classical or contemporary works without tonal whiplash. Alternatively, perform multiple sea shanties in succession to create a thematic concert segment or special pops concert that connects with audiences seeking something beyond standard classical repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing ensemble parts in styles ranging from rock to Latin to big band
  • Soloing over comping chord changes (where Matejko has composed solo sections)
  • Rhythmic precision and stylistic articulation within popular music idioms
  • Listening and responding to live professional accompaniment within a harmonic context
