Description
It is not only the great success of Nathan Evans' re-release of "The Wellerman" on social media that is responsible for the great popularity of sea shanties and naval songs. Such songs create a unique mood, a touch of adventure and wanderlust for the big, wide world. Hardly anyone can elude it and with "Vahid Matejko's Sea Shanty Play-Alongs" there are now the most beautiful sea shanties and naval songs skillfully arranged as an instrumental play-along series for recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet (opt. baritone T.C.), trombone (opt. baritone B.C.), violin, and accordion (piano). The varied arrangements have a wide stylistic range and offer echoes from rock, Latin, funk, big band to orchestral and Caribbean influences. Thus, each song has its own musical and instrumental appeal, to which the parts and/or solos specially composed by arranger Vahid Matejko also contribute. The original polyphonic choral vocals are replaced by polyphonic instrumental backings. Each of the ten titles was recorded live by excellent professional musicians and is available in two different versions: - a demo-track which features a live soprano recorder performance by the German specialist for pop/rock/jazz recorder Tobias Reisige and - a minus-one mix for you to play-along.

More about this title

About the Arranger: Vahid Matejko

Vahid Matejko is an arranger and composer with a distinctive gift for reimagining traditional material through contemporary instrumental lenses. His work across multiple genres, pop, rock, jazz, and world music, informs his approach to arrangement, where stylistic variety and instrumental personality are never afterthoughts but central to the musical experience.

Matejko's Sea Shanty Play-Alongs series demonstrates his skill at crafting polyphonic instrumental backings that honor the source material while making space for soloists to shine. His arrangements for recorder and other wind instruments prioritize both playability and genuine musicianship, drawing on his understanding of how different instruments can carry melody, harmony, and character simultaneously.

Why we love this

Matejko's arrangements bring genuine stylistic variety to sea shanties, weaving rock, Latin, funk, and big band textures into instrumental settings that feel fresh rather than nostalgic. Each arrangement includes its own composed solo line, giving soprano recorder players real melodic material to own rather than merely doubling a vocal part. The inclusion of both demo and play-along tracks makes these accessible for independent practice while still delivering that irreplaceable experience of playing in ensemble.

What to expect

Swaggering and buoyant, with enough rhythmic drive and harmonic color to make you feel like you're part of a real band rather than playing along to a backing track. The arrangements honor the adventurous spirit of the sea shanty while embedding the recorder into contemporary musical textures that make the instrument sound genuinely at home.

Who it's for

Soprano recorder students ready to move beyond folk tune collections and intermediate musicians seeking accessible yet musically substantial play-along material. This works especially well for students exploring popular music styles and those preparing for performances that go beyond traditional classical recorder contexts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the demo track first to absorb the intended style and articulation, especially in the funk and rock arrangements where rhythmic clarity shapes the character of the tune.
  • Use the online audio tracks to work on entrances and staying locked with the rhythm section; the recorded versions establish the groove you'll need to nail.
  • Pay attention to the composed recorder solos written into each arrangement. These are not mere ornamentation; they're structural moments that deserve the same rehearsal time you'd give to any featured melody.

How to use it

Feature individual arrangements in casual concerts or mixed instrumental recitals where you want to showcase contemporary recorder repertoire and ensemble playing. These work well as group pieces with multiple recorders or as featured solos within a larger recorder ensemble concert, and the thematic variety (ten different titles) means you can build a complete set list around them.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing alongside recorded accompaniments with secure rhythm and intonation
  • Articulation and style flexibility across rock, Latin, funk, big band, and orchestral idioms
  • Phrasing and control in composed recorder solos designed within arranged contexts
  • Listening skills for ensemble balance and interaction with harmonic backing tracks
