More about this title

About the Author: Janet Gardner

Janet Gardner

Janet Gardner spent 33 years teaching elementary general music in Montevideo, Minnesota, where she became deeply invested in creating accessible, engaging repertoire for young singers. Her work earned recognition as the 1995 Minnesota Music Classroom Teacher of the Year, and she went on to lead workshops at state universities and serve as a clinician at music conventions across the United States and Canada. She holds a Bachelor's degree in music education from Concordia College in Moorhead.

Gardner's catalog of musicals and choral works reflects her understanding of what elementary students actually enjoy performing. Beyond her published pieces with Alfred, she has received annual ASCAP awards and continues to compose in her home state. In her community, she remains active as a church musician and arts advocate, bringing the same humor and accessibility that define her compositions to everything she undertakes.

Why we love this

Gardner takes the school day itself as her material, which means your students instantly recognize themselves in every scene. The humor lands because it's rooted in genuine classroom moments, and pairing the script with seven accessible songs creates a natural vehicle for cross-grade or interdisciplinary performance without requiring elaborate staging.

What to expect

Lively and silly in the best way, with a winking recognition that school life is full of ridiculous moments worth celebrating. The humor never talks down to students; instead, it invites them to laugh at situations they navigate every day.

Who it's for

Grade 3 and above choirs looking for something that generates genuine student enthusiasm without demanding technical difficulty. It works equally well as a single full-group performance or as a collection of scenes tailored to different classes or grade levels.

How to get the most out of it

  • Cast your strongest readers as the script narrators; Gardner's dialogue moves briskly and benefits from crisp delivery that keeps the comedy timing tight.
  • Consider doubling actors and singers across different class periods so one group performs a full scene while another handles that scene's song, maximizing participation across your school.
  • Invite teachers, administrators, or office staff to inhabit the adult roles in vignettes; their willingness to be the butt of the joke will delight students more than any professional could.

How to use it

Open a spring concert with School Daze to establish an energetic, playful tone before moving into more formal repertoire, or use it as the entire program for an elementary assembly where multiple grade levels perform different scenes. At 30 minutes, it comfortably anchors a single performance slot while remaining flexible enough to expand or contract based on your cast size.

Skills your students will build

  • Learning dialogue pacing and comedic timing
  • Memorizing and delivering characterization within ensemble singing
  • Coordinating song lyrics with spoken script cues
  • Building confidence in front of an audience through humor
