About the Composer: Michael Oare
Michael Oare holds undergraduate degrees in both Music Composition and Music Education from Old Dominism University in Norfolk, Virginia. Over a 33-year tenure as Director of Bands at Great Bridge Middle School in Chesapeake, Virginia, he built a program that earned superior ratings in the Virginia Concert Band Performance Assessment for 32 of his 33 years, including an unbroken 30-year streak. His published works, including the GIA Publications titles "To Dream in Brushstrokes" and "Equilibrium," appear in the "Teaching Music Through Performance" series.
Oare has served as conductor of the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia Concert Band and remains active as a clinician, adjudicator, and performer with the Virginia Wind Symphony. He holds membership in ASCAP and Phi Beta Mu, earned the 2016 Chesapeake Public Schools Middle School Teacher of the Year award, and has received the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence twice. When not composing or teaching, he pursues offshore fishing along the Virginia and North Carolina coasts.
