About the Composer: Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest has spent over three decades in the middle school classroom while building a reputation as a composer and arranger whose work reaches audiences far beyond the concert hall. His pieces are performed by young musicians worldwide, and his contributions to music education extend through pedagogical methods including Measures of Success® and Warm-ups and Beyond. In 2017, his composition Cloud Gate drew over 5,000 spectators at Chicago's Millennium Park, and that same year he earned the Illinois Grade School Music Association's Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education.

Loest's catalog spans multiple publishers including Warner Bros. Publications, C.L. Barnhouse Company, and FJH Music Company. His music has also appeared on network television, including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Good Morning America. In 2022, he founded Fanfare Music Press to focus on high-quality band compositions and arrangements. Loest holds degrees from Illinois State University and Northwestern University, maintains ASCAP membership, and regularly accepts commissions for band.

Why we love this

Loest understands exactly what Grade 1.5 bands need: infectious energy, accessible voicing, and genuine appeal for students. This arrangement swaps academic exercise for genuine entertainment value without sacrificing musicality, and the optional drum set part opens the door for percussionists who might otherwise sit out a holiday number.

What to expect

Contemporary and fun rather than traditional, with a rock groove that feels current. The mashup of two familiar holiday melodies gives audiences that warm recognition, while the up-tempo energy and band arrangement make it feel fresh and present.

Who it's for

Grade 1.5 concert bands looking to program something festive that won't feel like a novelty or a step backward. This works equally well for holiday pops concerts, school assemblies, or standalone winter performances where you want the audience energized and the students genuinely excited to play.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the groove locked in the rhythm section; the hip rock feel depends on steady pulse from bass and drums rather than pushing or dragging.
  • Let the saxophone section shine during their featured moments without balancing them down in the ensemble sound.
  • Use the optional drum set part to involve more percussion students if your school has the instrumentation available.

How to use it

Pair this with one or two other holiday selections to create a complete seasonal concert section, or use it as an opener or closer to establish an upbeat tone for your winter performance. The approachable difficulty level means minimal rehearsal time is required, freeing up your schedule for other learning objectives.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing rock rhythms and syncopation in a band context
  • Maintaining steady pulse and groove awareness
  • Balancing featured solo lines within a full ensemble texture
