More about this title

About the Arranger: Ralph Ford

Ralph Ford

Ralph Ford brings nearly three decades of university teaching to his work as a prolific composer and arranger. Since 1986, he has held faculty positions in orchestration, arranging, theory, and applied studies while building an extensive catalog of over 250 titles for orchestra, concert band, jazz ensemble, and marching band published through Alfred Music's Belwin division.

Beyond the concert hall, Ford has worked across media and broadcast production, earning international awards for commercial compositions and scoring for television, radio, and digital platforms. His career began at age fifteen and includes a fifteen-year tenure as Director of Jazz Ensemble at Troy State University, where he earned his Master of Science degree in 1988.

Why we love this

Ford's arrangement captures the spirited energy of beloved holiday melodies while distributing melodic responsibility across your entire band. The Grade 3 scoring keeps technical demands reasonable without sacrificing the drive and festivity that makes this work an immediate crowd-pleaser, whether you open, close, or encore with it.

What to expect

Brisk and joyful, this medley crackles with festive momentum. The familiar melodies land immediately with audiences, while the bright orchestration and rhythmic drive give your band room to shine with energy and precision.

Who it's for

Grade 3 concert bands seeking reliable holiday repertoire that engages the entire ensemble. Directors want music that generates audience enthusiasm while remaining accessible to developing musicians.

How to get the most out of it

  • Maintain the indicated tempo throughout to preserve the energetic character; resist the temptation to rush during the tutti passages.
  • Balance the melodic sections carefully when different instrumental choirs carry the tune; ensure accompaniment figures don't overshadow featured voices.
  • Use the variety of instrumental combinations as an opportunity to highlight individual section strengths and build confidence in younger players.
  • Shape the dynamic arc across the entire medley so each melody statement feels fresh rather than repetitive.

How to use it

Open your December concert with this piece to set an uplifted mood, or use it as a closer for maximum holiday cheer. The 1:35 duration makes it an ideal encore that won't tax your ensemble after a full program.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing with consistent ensemble tempo across style changes
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment in different instrumental combinations
  • Responding to dynamic and articulation contrasts within a single piece
  • Maintaining accuracy in sectional passages while keeping the overall pulse driving forward
