More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck serves as Director of Choral Publications at Alfred Music, where he has built a catalog of more than 450 choral compositions, arrangements, and children's musicals. His published resources span vocal pedagogy (including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique) and performance literature performed by choirs worldwide. Beck holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College (Bachelor's) and Northwest Missouri State University (Master's).

Beyond the printed page, Beck conducts as a guest clinician and adjudicator for music educators across the United States and internationally. He has served as commissioned composer and guest conductor for honor choirs and all-state ensembles, particularly throughout the Southeast. As a tenor, he performs with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and has contributed as a studio vocalist for Alfred Music since 1992, bringing firsthand performance experience to every piece he creates.

Why we love this

Andy Beck understands exactly what middle school choirs need: accessible arrangements that feel like genuine musical experiences, not watered-down versions of "real" songs. Santa Songs pairs his proven gift for writing singable, enthusiastic choral literature with the theatrical scaffolding that young singers crave, complete with movement and staging options that transform rehearsal time into genuine performance energy without requiring elaborate production design.

What to expect

Santa Songs radiates infectious holiday warmth without veering into saccharine territory. The collection balances high-energy showstoppers with gentler moments, giving singers dynamic range and emotional stakes that keep audiences engaged from the opening North Pole scene through the final bows.

Who it's for

Middle school choir directors and elementary specialists who need flexible, joyful holiday literature that works equally well in classroom sing-alongs, school assemblies, and full concert settings. Young singers in grades 3-8 respond to Santa's universal appeal and the collection's mix of humor, storytelling, and genuine musicality.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish clear character choices with your singers before blocking any staged movement. Even small decisions (how Santa enters, the energy of the toy-making elves) help young performers commit fully to their parts and remember choreography under performance stress.
  • Layer in the recorded accompaniment during final rehearsals so singers experience the full orchestration they'll hear in performance. This prevents last-minute surprises about tempo, cutoffs, or balance between their voices and instruments.
  • Assign specific vocal sections or singers to optional solos and ensemble moments early enough that anyone stepping into a feature can prepare confidently without overshadowing ensemble unity.

How to use it

Program Santa Songs as the centerpiece of a December concert, selecting individual numbers to frame with other holiday fare, or mount the full suite as a standalone staged musical for a winter assembly. The collection's flexibility makes it equally at home as a 15-minute performance thread or a complete 45-minute program.

Skills your students will build

  • Managing ensemble balance between solo features and group singing
  • Coordinating singing with movement and stage directions
  • Interpreting character through vocal expression and storytelling
  • Reading and performing across multiple song styles and meters within a single concert context
