About the Composer: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw's fingerprints are all over modern choral music education. His work spans five decades and six continents, touching classrooms and concert halls from Colorado to Sweden to Australia. With formal training in music education, choral composition, and conducting at San Jose State and the University of Washington, Shaw built his reputation by founding and directing acclaimed vocal jazz ensembles at multiple universities while maintaining his prolific output as a composer and arranger.

Over 2500 of Shaw's compositions and arrangements are in print worldwide, with sales approaching 20 million copies. He's collaborated with jazz icons including Bobby McFerrin and Al Jarreau, directed the innovative COS Vocal Jazz Ensemble in California, and continues to lead the Jefferson State Choral Coalition at Southern Oregon University. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir recently commissioned his work. Beyond music, Shaw co-created Scroogical, an original musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol with his wife Markita.

Why we love this

Shaw delivers the rare gift of a novelty piece that actually rocks. It's got the humor and accessibility that keeps audiences laughing, but the grooves are solid and the orchestration gives your ensemble something genuinely fun to sink their teeth into. As a concert opener, it resets the energy in the room immediately.

What to expect

Pure Christmas fun filtered through a 1950s rock and roll lens. The energy is infectious and the lyrics paint a lighthearted picture of Santa working double shifts. Your singers will feel the groove the moment the tempo kicks in.

Who it's for

High school and college choirs looking for a holiday opener with personality. The combo voicing keeps it accessible for mixed ensembles while the arrangement demands solid musicianship and rhythmic confidence.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the groove locked and driving; the rock and roll feel demands precision in the rhythm section, so nail the backbeat early in rehearsals.
  • Lean into the novelty elements without winking at the audience. Commit fully to the vocal parts and let the comedy land naturally.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish tempo and feel, especially if your ensemble is new to this style of swing and articulation.
  • Balance vocal clarity with rhythmic tightness. The lyrics need to land, but the pocket is what makes it cook.

How to use it

Program this as your concert opener when you need to establish an upbeat tone and connect with your audience right away. It pairs beautifully alongside traditional carols, creating a programming arc that moves from playful to reverent. The 2:35 duration makes it ideal for filling that critical first slot without eating up valuable concert time.

  • Vocal jazz swing and groove interpretation
